Busting the myth that cooking with olive oil ruins teflon pans
New research by the Modern Olives Laboratory team has busted the myth that cooking with EVOO can ruin cookware such as Teflon coated pans. The (mis)belief is supported by some manufacturers’ stating that oils with higher smoke points are more suitable and that EVOO could be damaging to their coating.
To sort out myth from fact the Modern Olives Laboratory conducted research to assess the suitability of various cooking oils, including EVOO, for use on Teflon coated pans. The results found that cooking with EVOO had no different effect than other cooking oils.
It’s great news and provides even more confidence in using healthy EVOO for all cooking methods and in all cookware.

Australia Post's decision to end a "crucial" delivery service could undermine agritourism operators and online entrepreneurs, industry players warn. The government-owned business last month revealed it would no longer deliver certain perishable goods, such as cheese and meat, due to inconsistent food safety requirements across states and territories.

We’d be keen to know if any olive producers are affected by this. Let us know at editor@olivegrower.com.au

Australia recorded its wettest summer in half a decade and its coolest in nine years as La Niña snapped an eight-year hot streak in 2020-21. Rainfall across the country was 29 per cent above the long-term average, making it the soggiest summer in four years.

Glad to hear about the rain for many areas. Your editor is in South Australia and it’s dry, dry, dry in my little grove!

There is a renewed push for undocumented workers in Australia to be given an amnesty or "status resolution", with concern this group of people could miss out on the COVID-19 vaccine. It comes as a new report recommends the Australian government provide visas to undocumented agrifood workers in a one-off program.

The Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries anticipates a significant boost to olive oil exports due to the digitalization of bureaucratic approvals and new product labels. According to Minister Mohamed Fadhel Kraiem, producers and the government must prioritize packaging Tunisian olive oil with local labels to add value to oils destined for export by clearly identifying their origin.

Behind Tayyibe Demirel’s olive groves in southwest Turkey lies a vast, grey expanse, stripped bare by a coal mine eating into the rolling hillside. On the horizon, heavy smoke billows from three giant chimneys of the power plant by the town of Yatagan. Determined to save her land and village, Demirel, a 64-year-old grandmother, has singlehandedly taken on the operators extending the mine to feed what is one of Turkey’s largest power plants.

Farmers vs big mining … it’s a universal issue.

Executive Director Abdellatif Ghedira met with the country’s minister of rural development, Dy Ould Zein, in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott last month to facilitate the country’s accession to the intergovernmental organization.

The United States and European Union have agreed to suspend the $11.5 billion (€9.65 billion) worth of retaliatory tariffs reciprocally imposed during the ongoing 17-year dispute over subsidies to aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus. The 25-percent tariff imposed by the United States on some Spanish olive oils and Spanish and French green table olives will be dropped after U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen on Friday.
Extra virgin olive oil is one of the most popular foods in Europe, but inferior counterfeits are coming onto the market in increasing number. A research team led by Prof Dr Stephan Schwarzinger from the University of Bayreuth has now developed a rapid test to combat this food fraud, which can assess the quality, authenticity and origin of olive oils within just one hour.
