Now that these PSPS outages are over (for now at least), we have a little time to reflect and consider what changes can be made so that the next time these outages roll around, we can be better prepared to enjoy a little dimly lit quiet time. The most common adjustment would be to purchase a generator, which range from $250 - $2500 depending on the brand and the wattage. If you want even more comfort, you could always have your generator wired directly into your homes electric panel using a generator transfer switch. To do this you would need a larger generator with around 3000 - 5000 watts in order to handle the larger load that the panel demands. The transfer switch would set you back a couple hundred dollars, and you would need to hire an electrician to install the switch on your panel.
