Romania’s Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant Looking for New Investors as Partnership with China General Nuclear Power Corporation Terminated

Executive Summary:
Romanian authorities unceremoniously ended the partnership with the previously selected state-owned Chinese company, China General Nuclear Power Corporation, to develop Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant (“ C 3&4 ”). The decision was formalised on 12 June 2020 at the shareholders’ general meeting of Romania’s state-owned nuclear company.

As part of OCNI's Indigenous Series speaker Chelsea Klassen, M.A., Global Director, Indigenous Engagement, Hatch, explored the material impact on share price and project certainty that can ensue when social risks are not identified and managed using real-case examples, ways to identify and manage the social risks for better business performance, and offered insights to remain socially diligent post COVID-19.

CNLO Presents: The Challenge of Determining Nuclear Damage | June 23, 2020
Guest speaker Ms Ximena Vásquez-Maignan, Head of the NEA Office of Legal Counsel, gave an overview of the conclusions of the NEA report on on practical workshop outputs to support member countries to be prepared with regard to the determination of nuclear damage and claims handling in the case of a nuclear accident with transboundary damage.

OCNI Town Hall: Indigenous Economic and Business Development | June 26, 2020
We focused on the opportunities for Indigenous economic and business development in the nuclear industry. Our panel included Bruce Power, Des Nedhe Group, Creative Fire, and the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) who shared their stories, experiences, and visions for the future of Indigenous participation in the nuclear industry. The OCNI and CCAB also announced an MOU between the two organizations. The Hon. Greg Rickford, Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines, and Minister of Indigenous Affairs also took questions from panelists and attendees on the future of nuclear energy and Indigenous relations in Ontario.

Energy Strategy Summit 2020 | June 30, 2020
OCNI President and CEO, Ron Oberth, joined Teodor Chirica, Board Member, Nuclearelectrica, and Lucian Rusu, President, ROMATOM for a special panel on the future of nuclear energy collaboration between Romania and Canada. Convened as part of 2020 Energy Strategy Summit presented by Energynomics.ro and in partnership with the Canadian Embassy in Romania, each member of the panel emphasized the importance of the relationship between the two countries. This connection has existed since the late 1960’s and continues today through the work of Canadian companies on-site in Romania and the MOU between ROMATOM and OCNI. During the panel Ron also reminded all participants of the upcoming virtual trade mission planned by OCNI for September as well as the plan for an in person trade mission in March.
