Winter Sports Update 1/8/21

The Arizona Interscholastic Association Executive Board on Friday voted 5-4 to cancel the high school winter sports season.

However, high school practices will remain on as scheduled. There are three meetings over the next two days which should help provide a more clear picture of what our winter season will look like.

This uncertainty causes stress for our athletes. Please be reassured that we are committed to providing a season of play. We thank you for your patience as we work through yet another challenge in our pursuit of what is best for our student athletes.

Questions can be directed to Arete Athletic Director Todd Conklin at:

The GHMSL functions independently from the AIA. All middle school practices and games remain on as scheduled.

Advanced Archery also resumes as regularly scheduled.

Winter Sports- GH Arizona Statement

Dear Winter Sport Families,
I hope that this holiday season afforded you some well-deserved rest and that your second semester is off to a good start. I am reaching out to update you on the status of the winter sports season.

We have received word that the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA), the High School Athletics Association that Great Hearts competes in, has decided to cancel all winter sports due to the current status of COVID-19. We are deeply saddened by this news as athletics is a key part of each student's scholastic experience. While we recognize that the competitive season is no longer viable, we believe that it is still vital to provide a safe environment for our student athletes to continue practicing and competing. We remain committed to providing an athletic experience for our students while maintaining the same safety measures that we have been following all school year. This means that all Great Hearts middle school and high school sports teams will continue to be in operation.

For our Great Hearts Middle School League, all sports will continue to function as is with all safety and social distancing practices in place. If you need more information regarding practice or game schedules, please contact your athletic director or reach out to your student's coach directly.

For our high school athletes, our athletics team is hard at work putting together a plan to create a league for this season so that our students can keep practicing and compete against other athletes from across the Great Hearts network and the Phoenix Metro area. As these details are finalized, your Athletic Director will be updating you.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through this school year. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Rickey
Director of Athletics
Great Hearts Arizona

Winter Sports- GHMSL Fan Policy

Arete Prep and the Great Hearts Middle School League will emphasize creating a safe environment for our student athletes,  coaches, and spectators.

The GHMSL will allow 2 family members per athlete to attend our MS Soccer games. Please help us adhere to this policy, wear masks, and distance from others at games so that we can continue to at least have two family members present.

This policy is fluid, and can change based on county and local metrics. Please stay tuned for updates, and thank you for your patience.

Questions can be directed to Athletic Director Todd Conklin ([email protected])
