Reflections with Fr. Mark

When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. 2020 End of Year Financial Statements
A Message to Our Generous Parishioners~ St. Luke Parish will be sending End of Year Financial Statements only to parishioners who request a statement. We implemented this process last year, rather than send statements automatically, due to the recent changes in the tax laws regarding itemized deductions.
Many area parishes have also adopted this process to be good stewards of our resources and funds by reducing printing and postage costs. Please contact the Pastoral Office at (626) 291-5900 or e-mail Kerrin at kerrin@stluketemplecity.org to request a statement of your 2020 parish donations. Thank you again for your generosity and support.

Intercessory Prayer Ministry Welcomes Prayer Requests & Members
The Intercessory Prayer Ministry invites members to pray for those in need. The ministry receives any requests for those needs that require prayer for days, weeks or months. Prayer requests might be related to recovery from or living with cancer, other diseases and sicknesses; recovery from surgery; high-risk pregnancies; or addictions, etc.
Members commit to praying each day for these needs - whatever time fits your schedule. The only requirement is that you have an e-mail address, as all prayer requests will be sent that way once or twice a week. To join or request a prayer, e-mail Angelica at 44angelicafe@gmail.com.

'Drive-thru' Confessions
'Drive-thru' Confessions are offered at 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Please wear a mask and drive through the church parking lot where you will be directed through the back alley to approach one of the priests who will hear your brief confession from outside the passenger side of the car.
If there are multiple people in the car, the passenger/s may exit and stand at a safe distance and we will come to them after hearing the driver’s confession. This is not a prolonged counseling moment: we want anybody who wants a brief confession following these months of lockdown to have the opportunity, so please be prepared and expedient. Please drive out safely through the rear gate onto Live Oak Avenue.

Food Assistance Available for Parishioners in Need
Our St. Luke Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conference wants our parishioners to know that food is available in our St. Luke Food Pantry if you are in need because of your inability to access food during the Covid-19 crisis.
We are very grateful for the food that our generous parishioners have previously donated and though our Pantry Share Days have been temporarily halted, we can still make the food available for our parish family. All our food is shelf stable and does not include fresh produce or foods that require refrigeration.
Please call (626) 684-2914 and one of our SVdP members will make arrangements to deliver or have you safely pick up the food at the Pantry. We continue to pray for all of our generous parishioners and we look forward to the time when we can reopen our doors for our normal distribution.
In keeping with our Vincentian mission to assist those in need in our local community, our conference continues to provide financial assistance for rent, utilities, food and household items during the Covid-19 crisis.

January is Poverty Awareness Month
Pope Francis, in his Angelus address on January 3, warned of the temptation to take care only of one’s own interests during the pandemic and “to live hedonistically, that is, seeking only to satisfy our own pleasure.” In the live video broadcast from the Apostolic Palace, the pope said that “things will get better to the extent that, with God's help, we work together for the common good, putting the weakest and most disadvantaged at the center.”
“We don't know what 2021 has in store for us, but what each of us and all of us together can do is to commit ourselves a little more to take care of each other and of creation, our common home,” the pope said.
January is Poverty Awareness Month. We are invited to join the U.S. Bishops, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, and the Catholic community in the United States in taking up Pope Francis' challenge to live in solidarity with the poor.
The USCCB has published a calendar for the month of January that helps us focus daily on issues of poverty. You can access the calendar here. In addition to the calendar, you can read longer daily reflections which include links to other resources and a challenge for each day. To make it really easy, you can sign up to have the daily reflections e-mailed to you during Poverty Awareness Month.
What will you do for the weakest and most disadvantaged
in our communities during the month of January?

Join OneLife LA Virtually on January 23!
Seven years ago, OneLife LA began in Los Angeles as a one-day event meant to catalyze a movement of love and mercy in our entire community. Each year, 20,000+ people gathered in Downtown LA to witness the beauty and dignity of every human life. We listened to powerful stories from people who have overcome great challenges in life and have learned to use that struggle to help others. And, we mobilized thousands of people to do good work every day to help those in need.
This year, we will gather virtually on Jan. 23! Visit https://onelifela.org/ to learn more and to register to receive OneLife LA updates.
