Great Gobs of Gratitude
Student Development would like to thank you all for the terrific response to the Week #10 Starfish Survey and for all of the excellent partnering work with the advising team. Here are a couple of excellent "did you know" nuggets:
- Participation in the Week #10 survey was up 12%. Thank you! (591 survey submissions compared to 526 last year)
- There was a 17% increase in the number of flags raised. Thank you!
- Kudos – oh yeah – they are up 18% with 985 total kudos given to students. Thank you!
Remember – you don’t need to wait for a survey to utilize Starfish! In fact, 28% of all faculty Starfish activity so far this semester has been outside of the survey periods. You may raise a flag, offer a referral or a kudo for any student at any time of the semester. The Advising Team is here to help. Reach out anytime or contact leadadvisors@harpercollege.edu.

Join us for the next Lunch & Learn series workshop today at 12 p.m. to learn ways to give substantive feedback and recycle comments to save time and effort. You’ll see the type of questions that help or hinder student achievement and acquire tips to ignite students’ curiosity, respect their thinking, and stoke their engagement. Our faculty facilitator for this session is Karen Patterson, Associate Professor, Art. Come join Karen and the Academy for a great discussion.

An updated, easier-to-use, more powerful Content Editor has just been released to our Blackboard Server. There are lots of great reasons to like the updated Content Editor. Adding content has been simplified, and it works better on both hand-held devices and larger screens. There are several improvements for accessibility and some new features, too. Learn more about the new updates.

The Learning Assessment Committee and the General Education-Information Literacy Work Group are gathering feedback to inform development of an Information Literacy Improvement Plan. The plan will be completed in Spring 2021, implemented in FY2022, and a follow-up assessment of this outcome will be conducted in FY2023.

Teaching remotely can be a very isolating experience, but we have many communities that you can join virtually to share in your joys and struggles as an educator. If you are looking to connect with other faculty, please consider joining:
Yammer, an online platform set up like social media where faculty can join communities related to topics such as Online Instruction; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and Wellness. Yammer is a Microsoft Office app, so you will find it along with the other programs you use in Office 365. Subscribe to forums in order to receive posts in your Harper email, download the Yammer app to your phone, or occasionally log into Yammer to read over posts. Watch this video for a quick overview on how to use Yammer (this video focuses on the Online Instruction Forum, but will help you get acquainted with Yammer).
Communities of Practice, a program that supports a group of faculty that come together around a shared interest. Groups typically meet every 3-4 weeks and complete an annual plan in which they investigate a topic related to teaching and learning and implement related strategies in their practice, ultimately sharing out what they learned with the larger community. If you are looking to find a Community of Practice, check out our Join or Start a Community of Practice webpage to see a list of groups that are seeking new members or how to start a new CoP.

Staying Centered in Trying Times
For many of us, it is increasingly difficult to maintain focus and to find the ability to ground ourselves in the middle of stressful times. What energy we do find is likely spent on our students or our families. After a lifetime of studying meditative martial arts, one teacher would like to offer a few ways that mindset and staying centered can help.

Faculty Confidence in Online Learning Grows
While college support and faculty confidence has increased in online learning, an article from Inside Higher Ed reflects on a new survey that highlights concerns about equity for underrepresented students.
Excerpt from the article: "'As soon as we made the decision to go fully online last March, there was a clear difference in success rates for the rest of the term because of access to technology, equipment, and internet,' the report quotes one community college faculty member as saying. 'It was frustrating and heartbreaking to see which students struggled to manage the class. This is the biggest hurdle we face. Making online classes is hard, but not as hard as making sure everyone has equal access.'"
