Sesquicentennial Special–Alumni Stories that Shape our History

Time and Time Again
Henrique Amorim graduated from Ohio State with a master's in botany in 1970. He returned to Ohio State in 1974 as a visiting scholar after receiving his PhD in agronomy from the University of São Paulo (USP). In 1977, Amorim started what would be a very successful business in alcohol fermentation, Fermentec, in the city of Piracicaba. Most recently, he visited Ohio State in 2018 for the launch of the book Pathways to Collaboration, in which his experience was featured.

Fisher College of Business Honors Cohort Global Lab in Brazil

Students, faculty and staff from the Fisher Honors Cohort Program were in Brazil December 11-21. The program consists of a diverse, tight knit group of 30 highly motivated, hand-picked students who seek to leverage educational opportunities across the entire university. The program spans the autumn and spring semesters of a student's junior year and continues into their senior year.

2018 Ohio State Visiting Scholar Received Research Awards in Brazil

Beatriz Schmidt, PhD, from the Federal University of Rio do Sul (UFRGS) and current faculty member at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG) received two best PhD dissertation awards (in psychology and in humanities) from CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), Brazil's most important federal research funding and supporting agency, and from the Ayrton Senna Institute for Education. Ohio State faculty member, Sarah Schoppe-Sullivan, co-advised the dissertation during Schmidt's time as a visiting scholar at Ohio State in 2018.

Welcome, Camila Ramos da Silva

Camila Ramos da Silva has joined the Brazil Gateway in São Paulo as the business development manager. Ramos da Silva will be responsible for establishing relationships with partners to develop executive programs, internships and education abroad opportunities. Camila has a bachelor's degree in international relations from Senac and is currently finishing a postgraduation program on business administration management at Fundação Getúlio Vargas. Prior to her appointment at the Brazil Gateway, Ramos da Silva led Microsoft's ethnic and racial diversity office in Brazil. She can be reached at [email protected].

Join us for a Buckeye celebration! We'll highlight our university's sesquicentennial, our Brazil Gateway's fifth anniversary, reflect on Ohio State's and USP-ESALQ's 55-year-long partnership and enjoy an alumni photo exhibit. At the reception, guests will meet Ohio State leadership who will be visiting Brazil–including Executive Vice President and Provost Bruce McPheron, Vice Provost for Global Strategies and International Affairs Gil Latz, Global Gateways and Partnerships Executive Director Padmini Roy-Dixon and Brazil Gateway Director Jane K. I am feeling so grateful and inspired after an unforgettable trip to Brazil with the Fisher Honors Cohort! There are so many misconceptions about Brazil, so I was hesitant about traveling there, but now I can't wait to go back! I am amazed by all that the country has to offer and the incredible people that live there.
