March 10, 2021

Dear Neighbors,

Some good news at last! Spring is approaching, many of our students are back to in-person learning and the number of vaccines available to residents is quickly expanding – the county received over 19,000 doses of vaccine this week up from 13,000 a few weeks ago. And, as you can see in the COVID-19 Case Information chart below, almost 9 percent of county residents have been fully vaccinated. We still have a long way to go, but these are very positive steps forward.

More good news:
  • Later this month a mass vaccination site is scheduled to open in Alexandria as a joint partnership between Fairfax County, the City of Alexandria and Inova. According to Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay, at maximum capacity this site can vaccinate close to 12,000 people a day. When it opens, this facility will become an important regional facility to vaccinate eligible residents of our county and Alexandria. A reminder that Fairfax County residents must register through the county's vaccination webpage here. Vaccinations by appointment continue to be provided at the main Fairfax County Government Center, Fairfax County Health Department locations, as well as at county partners and select pharmacies.
  • The Fairfax County Public Library is set to reopen for Express Services beginning March 22. Customers will be able to visit branches for up to 30 minutes Monday and Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Curbside pickup of materials on hold will remain available to customers Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capacity limits will be in place: up to 30 members of the public at a time may be in community branches and up to 60 may be in regional branches. Learn more.
  • Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared important new guidelines on how people who have been fully vaccinated can start to do some things they stopped doing because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These include gathering indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask. Learn more. However, it should be noted that we should continue to follow Gov. Northam’s executive order on gathering sizes, which changed on March 1.

Stay safe everyone and I hope you are able get outside to enjoy our beautiful spring weather!

Respectfully,
Walter

Reston Comprehensive Plan Study
Next Steps Include Community Engagement
The Reston Comprehensive Plan Study Task Force is scheduled to wrap up its review process this summer following a yearlong effort and more than two dozen meetings (the photo is from our virtual Webex meeting on Monday). Its recommendations will then be shared for feedback at town hall meetings and dialogues with stakeholders such as homeowner associations, community organizations and business groups. More information will be forthcoming on dates and other details when available.

Since May 2020, the Reston Comprehensive Plan Study Task Force members have been working diligently, with the support of the county’s Department of Planning and Development, to review and propose updates to key elements of the Comprehensive Plan including the planned balance of ongoing redevelopment, infrastructure and the environment across all of Reston.

Topic areas under review include:
  • Planning Principles
  • Population
  • Transportation
  • Parks & Open Space
  • Village Center Density
  • Public Art
  • Equity
  • Energy/Environment
  • Public Health
  • Affordable Housing

I initiated the review process of the Reston Comprehensive Plan in January 2020 and it was approved by the Board of Supervisors for additional study and community input.

The review process has been somewhat slowed by the pandemic, but I am very excited by the work and the collaboration by the task force, as well as county agencies including the Department of Planning and Development and Department of Transportation, among others. We still have several months of work ahead, but I believe the outcome will reaffirm Restonians’ decision to live in a planned, equity-focused community.

The updated proposed plan includes recognition of the immediate and longer-term impacts of the pandemic.
