Head of School Message
Heather Moore, Head of School
Dear Parents,

Please join us this Friday, March 12, 2021 for our Primary Years Family Virtual Shabbat at 1:30pm. A link and more information was posted in ParentSquare last Friday by Mrs. Brashevitzky. I look forward to seeing everyone!

As we all look forward to Spring Break and celebrating Passover I want to remind everyone to read SIA's travel policy, which can be found in ParentSquare. If you or your family are leaving town for break or planning on gathering for the holiday, please be in touch with Mrs. Susan Schwartzman, our school nurse, or myself so that we can determine when your child may return to school after break.

The SIA Annual Scholastic Book Fair is coming up on Monday, March 15 through Friday, March 19, 2021. Your child’s class will visit the book fair and make wish lists that will be sent home. Students can make purchases during school or families can visit the virtual version of the SIA book fair as well. More information will be posted in ParentSquare soon.

Below you will see some reminders for next week.
Shavuah Tov, wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Reading Fun!
Lorna Orleans, Early Years Director
Last week our students in our SIA Early Years Program, along with their teachers, celebrated a week of Seussian fun in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. There were crazy hats, silly socks and crazy hair. But, more than all that there were a lot of “read alouds” going on in all of our classrooms.

Reading experts agree that reading aloud is one of the most important elements in literacy development. Why? Because, reading aloud develops so many important skills! It develops vocabulary. Reading aloud gives children a model of phrased and fluent reading. It helps build phonological awareness which is the ability to recognize the structure of language. Reading aloud promotes the understanding that printed type represents the spoken word. The list goes on and on but maybe, most importantly, reading aloud connects children to the pleasure and joy of reading.

Our teachers read children’s literature aloud all year but this week, in particular, our students heard a lot of rhyming words in the signature style of Theodore Geisel a.k.a Dr. Seuss. Rhyme is another important literacy tool because it allows children to more naturally learn about word families and helps them create a mental “storehouse” of sounds. Rhyme also tunes our ears to differences in rhythm and inflection which are so integral to meaning.

The reading of rhyming books last week became a catalyst for rhyming games in many of our classrooms. It became an extension of a poetry exploration in one class and in another the nonsense and silliness of books read this week helped some of our older students understand the distinction between fiction and nonfiction. Our EY2 friends even explored feelings through rhyme with the book My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss.

It was a celebratory week about books of all kinds and about how reading can bring us memorable and engaging experiences. Once again, “hats off” to all of our teachers

Shavua Tov,

Scholastic Book Fair Coming to SIA Next Week
The Scholastic Book Fair will be on Monday, March 15th, through Friday, March 19th.

Teachers and students will be able to shop at the Scholastic Book Fair in-person, and the Virtual Fair will be available on our school's Scholastic Book Fair Homepage for online shopping. If you are interested in an e-Wallet, a cashless way for students to shop at the fair, please visit our homepage to set up an account. With the SIA health mitigation strategies in place, parents will not be able to come to the Scholastic Book Fair. We will miss seeing you this year but know that your support helps provide supplies for our classrooms and Library.

If you have any questions regarding the Scholastic Book Fair or Virtual Fair, please contact me at mcolumbus@strelitzacademy.org.
Last Day to Register for Chess Club
Chess Club is back for grades 1-5.

Chess Club will Meet online every Thursday from 4:00-5:00 starting March 11-June 3. Students who are not in Sundown will be able to join from home. Chess Club students participating in the SIA Sundown program will meet in the library and join on school Chromebooks.

We have 2 world-class coaches from the Hampton Roads Chess Association that will help our students learn some great strategies. Returning Cless Club students will be happy to know that Coach Mark is returning along with Coach Mike. With these 2 amazing coaches, the Chess Club has become one of SIA's most popular after-school clubs.

The cost is $60 per student. Students will receive group instruction, individualized instruction, memberships to ChessKids, and opportunities to play in online tournaments.
