Week of January 11, 2021

Good Afternoon CCGS Families,

We had a great week of learning and a fun return to school this week. It was so great to see all the smiling faces and the excitement of the snow outside. This week while visiting students in classrooms they shared their reading and math goals with Mrs. Anderson and I. They are so proud to share how they are doing and how far they have come with their goals each week. Many students know their exact percentages and levels and the steps to take to reach their goals.

Congratulations to the following in person and remote students for making our December leaderboard!

K: Gabriel V., Navie K.

1st grade: Anniston C., Brylee T., Sarah C., Arianna O., Kaydence H., Helena C, and Liam F.

2nd grade: Lillian H., Mason M., Emma O., Travis F., Andrew M.

3rd grade: Abigail S., Sophia K., Jordan M., Amelia S., Owen M., and Sophia B.

I wanted to remind you that next Thursday is the last day of second quarter. There is no school on Friday, January 15th for students. It is a teacher Institute day.

Please add any January pictures you have taken to this album. Take a look at our December video so you can see all the fun that took place last month. Thank you so much for sharing your at home pictures with us!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family!

Mrs. Hamm

Congratulations to our Shout Out Winners! They will be doing our pledge for us one day next week.
Congratulations to Ms. Graham's classroom for being the Golden Platter Winner the week prior to winter break. I enjoyed my recess with them today!
Congratulations to Ms. Ripsch's classroom for being the Golden Platter Winner this week. I look forward to playing at recess with them this next week!
  • If your child has lost his or her face mask, please contact the front office with a description and we will check our lost and found for it.
  • If your child was exposed to an individual who has tested positive for COVID and lives in the same household as that person OR if your child has tested positive for COVID, please email myself and our nurse at [email protected]. The quarantine requirements for school are different that than the CDC guidelines and the safety of all of our students and staff is my highest priority.
  • Please send two masks each day with your child. The disposable masks should not be worn each day to school without changing them. With the colder weather, masks can become uncomfortable and wet after being outside due to condensation. Over the weekend, please check the fit of your child's mask. We are seeing more masks falling below the nose and more reminders are being give. I think some are getting stretched out. It is a great time to do a fit check!
  • Please click here for a press release from the Yorkville Library if you are looking for some fun activities for your family.
  • On January 1, the district transitioned to an upgraded alert notification system. The system is used to send emails, phone calls, and texts to parents, employees, and students. The change was made to consolidate the district’s communication systems and offer enhanced engagement with district stakeholders. In the future, the system can be expanded for use by teachers and coaches to further streamline communications with families, as well as allow families to customize their contact preferences. To ensure you successfully receive messages through the new system, please add [email protected] to your “trusted sender”/”do not block list” lists. In addition, if you have a new email address or phone number, now is a great time to contact your child’s school secretary to update the information. If you have multiple children in the district, please contact the secretary at your oldest child’s school. On Sunday, January 17, at 6 p.m., the district will send an email and phone message to all District 115 families and employees to test the new notification system. If you miss the phone message, you may dial 855-267-0402 to hear all the messages that were sent to you from the district in the last 30 days. Please send an email to [email protected] if your contact information is up-to-date with your child’s school, but you do not receive this phone and/or email communication from the district (please indicate your child’s school and full name in the email).  Thank you for your cooperation as we work to continually enhance our services to our families.
Check out some of the pictures from this week!
Miss Fenstra's Classroom Highlight
This week we have really been focusing on our goals. We have learned that our ‘Master Goals’ (what we want to be when we grow up) take several steps to achieve. After reading a book on setting goals we learned that even as 3rd graders, we can work towards those goals now! Every job that we want to be reading is involved in some way! Each week we have a list of ‘Must Dos’ for the week. The students are all assigned to a reading level on Raz Kids and get to choose books at their level to read, listen, and take quizzes on. We also work on a spelling list for the week. Each student receives a list of 72 different ways that they can practice these new spelling words and we take a test on them on Fridays. We also work on different Science or Social Studies topics during this time.

Here are some student thoughts on this week-

We are talking about goals in readings. It's super fun.- Sabrina b
Doing our goal pages and talking about goals Mackenzie C., Ava B., Ryan M.
When we learn goals it teaches us other ways to do if something else is happening like needing help or figuring out ways to do a project Ella m.
I love reading, I love raz kids and spelling and science.- Tylie H.

We have really been working hard on Place Value. Even though two numbers might be made up of the same digits, the place value of each of those digits can make the number greater or less than. Did you know that 0 is important? After discussing how $100 and $1 would be the same without the zeros, the kids have determined that zero is really important! Each day we also work on ‘Must dos’ working on our multiplication facts and on our skill building.

Below are some thoughts the students have on math and a few smiles.
