Market Updates
-----------------
Today marks the end of one era and the beginning of a new. After serving for nearly four years our beloved Market Manager Francesca Benedetti is moving to Boise, ID and tomorrow's market is her last. We also joyfully welcome our new Market Director, Pritha Golden, to the HFM family this week. See farewell and hello statements from each of them below.
From the outgoing Market Manager:
To my cherished market family, thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Market Manger over the past four years. Getting to know each and every farmer, rancher, food maker, vendor, volunteer, community organization, and canine shopper was a true pleasure. The connections forged here will continue to lift me up and drive me forward on my next adventure in Idaho. I've always felt welcomed and appreciated by the entire HFM community, and feel that even more so in the open dialogues about how I, and the market, can continue to evolve and improve in our endeavors to serve both the agricultural community, and those community members lacking equal access to quality food. Thank you for the support and making this kind of work possible.

From the incoming Market Director:
Hello there! My name is Pritha and I am honored to be joining the Hollywood Farmers Market as the new Market Director. I was born and raised in Portland and moved to Eugene, Oregon in high school. This is when I first fell in love with the world of local food and began traveling across the state working farmers markets. For the last 15 years, my work and passion have centered around the joy of growing, distributing, and sharing nutritious food in local communities. Having worked both on production farms, and with schools and food-justice non-profits, I am passionate about supporting and thriving market for growers and the local community. I look forward to building relationships with all of the vendors and community members who contribute to, and create the Hollywood and Lloyd Farmers Markets.

We look forward to seeing you at the market!
We're re-painting Hollywood Garden Mural on Sunday, September 8th!
 -------------------
We are happy to announce that the Hollywood community will be coming together this September to re-paint the street mural on our block of Hancock Street!. Please save the date: Sunday, September 8th.  (Note: our backup date in case of rain will be the following Sunday, September 15th.)

See our Facebook event if you are on Facebook, and please spread the word - it takes about 80-100 people to paint this giant and multi-colored mural! If you're interested in helping us coordinate things on the day of the painting, please email ari@hollywoodfarmersmarket.org.

In 2016, over 100 volunteers came out to paint the Hollywood Garden Mural on NE Hancock Street between 44th and 45th - a block which hosts the Hollywood Farmers Market each Saturday. Taking its inspiration from the bountiful produce on display at the farmers market, the mural takes the form of a garden, with a path of stepping stones winding its way around fruits, vegetables and vines. This is one of the largest street paintings in Portland, stretching curb-to-curb along 100 feet of Hancock Street. On market day, it serves as a beautiful carpet for the farmers market, and throughout the week it leaves a reminder of the market on the street.

Our street mural has worn and faded over the past couple years, and it's time to re-paint it! We will gather on Sunday, September 8th to re-paint the mural, and re-beautify this block of the Hollywood neighborhood!
Cooking demo this Saturday with Sara Calderon
 -------------------
Looking for a fresh idea for making use of summer vegetables? This Saturday, the farmers market will feature a cooking demonstration with nutritionist Sara Calderon. She'll be demonstrating two recipes: Cucumber & Peach Salad with Herbs and Smashed Green Bean Salad with Radishes and Pistachios.

Sara's demo last week was a big hit - Summer Squash Slaw and Tomato Cabbage Tabbouleh! If you missed it, you can see the recipes on our website here.

The demo will start at 9am, and run until 12 noon.
POP Club continues!

Black Pearl Cherries
Kiyokawa Family Orchards
Black Pearl cherries are a dark variety, similar to Bing with a great sweet-tart flavor. Kiyokawa Family Orchards is located high up in the Hood River Valley, and their altitude means that they continue to have cherries into August! In addition to Black Pearl, they also currently have Bing, Rainier, Royal Anne, and Montmorency (sour/pie) cherries.

Ramen Noodles
Umi Organic
The first ever locally-made organic ramen noodle that can be stored in your refrigerator made its debut at HFM in 2016, and since then has found its way into homes and hearts around the Northwest. Umi Organic's noodles cook in 2 minutes, creating a quick-and-easy foundation for a wholesome meal. Stop by their booth at the market, and you can also get a fresh-made noodle bowl, with miso sesame or bibim sauce, house pickles, Hot Mama Salsa chili oil, optional egg or tofu - and of course, fresh seasonal vegetables from the farmers market! This week all the veggies in the noodle bowls will be from Stoneboat Farm.

Chili Oil
Hot Mama Salsa
You may already know Hot Mama's salsas, but have you tried their amazing chili oils? The Chili de Arbol oil is made with Arbol peppers (grown on Sauvie Island), garlic, sesame seeds and peanut oil. Featured in Willamette Week's Best of Portland an "essential hot sauce for your pantry", it is great for any fans of heat! The Guajillo oil is less hot, with a flavor that's sweet and slightly smoky. And the "smoky coffee" chili oil has a rich, earthy flavor, similar to mole sauce. Stop by the booth and try all three!
