Update from Southeast MAFP Board of Directors;
Supporting Macomb, Oakland and Wayne County Members
The SEMAFP, a Component Chapter of MAFP, exists to promote excellence in healthcare and the betterment of the health of the people of Southeastern Michigan. Despite the impact of COVID, the SEMAFP still meets every three months, moving forward with its mission as a board. Below are some updates for our members.
Supporting Residents: In April 2020 during the height of COVID’s impact on our Southeast Michigan-area Family Medicine residency programs, SEMAFP provided $15 e-gift cards to purchase lunch for all the Family Medicine residents of Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties. The SEMAFP will again provide these e-gift cards to our residents during the month of February 2021.
Donations to Sanctum House and Zaman International: SEMAFP donated $2,500 to the Sanctum House to support the organization’s shelter for victims of human trafficking. In addition, SEMAFP donated $1,000 to Zaman International which provides hope to marginalized women and children through basic needs assistance and skills training in Detroit and the western suburbs.
Gift Card Donation for Families in Need: The SEMAFP board is very cognizant of the negative financial impact COVID-19 continues to have on families in the greater Detroit area. To help combat this, SEMAFP will provide $50 Kroger gift cards for families in need.
A Time to Learn Together: SEMAFP is partnering with Michigan Academy of Family Physician for our next member event. SEMAFP will sponsor a live virtual tour of the Detroit Experience Factory. Members will enjoy a virtual tour entitled, “Detroit 101 Assets, History, and Challenges” to help us understand Detroit’s history, and to inspire us to take an active role influencing the city’s future. Tour highlights will include virtual tours of the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum, and the Detroit Science Center. The tour will also include entertainment venues at the Fox Theatre, Detroit Opera Theatre, Comerica Park, and Little Caesars Arena.
Vanguard Award to Honor Dr. Patsalis’ Legacy: Our SEMAFP president Dr. Angelo Patsalis died on April 6, 2020 from complications of the coronavirus. He was a phenomenal leader and fierce advocate for our specialty. The SEMAFP board is continuing Angelo’s legacy. We are proud to announce the creation of the Angelo Patsalis, MD, FAAFP Vanguard Award.
The Patsalis Vanguard Award ($2,500 and a personalized plaque) will be granted annually to two graduating Family Medicine Residents who have committed to practice in southeast Michigan. It is intended to acknowledge young physicians who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to community service. Through this award, Dr. Patasalis' legacy will continue to inspire future generations of physician leaders. This award, and the persistent work of the SEMAFP board members, will continue Dr. Patsalis’ mission. The first award will be granted in May.
CME Requirements for Michigan Family Physicians
For Michigan family physicians, tracking required Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits may seem daunting and confusing. MAFP members have multiple entities to which they report credits, including American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). In addition, Michigan family physicians are also required to complete state-mandated CME topics in order to maintain licensure. As Family Medicine Foundation of Michigan, our philanthropic arm, continuously seeks to provide meaningful opportunities to best accommodate members’ CME requirements, it is important for physicians to fully understand the nuances of the requirements.
In 2021, MAFP members can look forward to a robust lineup of valuable CME. If you have a topic of interest you believe may benefit your colleagues, email Meeting Planner Denna Bunting.
AAFP
AAFP is a member organization dedicated solely to Family Physicians under which your state chapter, MAFP, operates to provide state-relevant information and support. Your member re- election cycle begins January 1 of the year following the activation of your membership and lasts for three full calendar years. Active AAFP/MAFP members must report at least 150 credits of approved CME every three calendar years. The 150 credits must include at least 75 AAFP Prescribed credits and 25 credits from live activities.
State-mandated Topics
For each cycle, Michigan mandates each medical doctor to complete 150 hours of continuing education. This mandate includes one hour on medical ethics and three hours in the area of pain and symptom management which may include clinical physician communication related to pain, management of pain, quality pain care, or ethics and health-related to pain, among others. Michigan also mandates that physicians receive training on human trafficking; although this one-time requirement must be completed prior to your next licensure renewal, it does not count toward your overall 150 required CEs.

Building an Integrated Behavioral Health Program in Primary Care Webinar | Thursday, February 18 | 7-8 p.m. ET
This one-hour webinar will delve into how primary care physicians can actively engage in providing integrated behavioral health services. Premature death from mental illness is a problem within the general population. While most of these deaths are due to comorbid conditions such as heart and lung disease, diabetes, and infectious diseases, individuals with mental health issues have an even greater need for primary care services than their peers without mental health difficulties. Studies show that people with behavioral health needs receive a lower quality of care in primary care settings because they often have difficulty navigating the healthcare system. This webinar has been approved for 1.00 Online Only, Live AAFP Prescribed credit. Click here to register.
