IN THIS ISSUE
Christ Church Bridge Run T-shirts will be ready for pick-up starting at 2:00 pm, Thursday afternoon.

There are many volunteer positions available at Christ Church and in the community right now. Please check out the numerous opportunities in the articles below.

Rector's Ramblings

This past Sunday I preached about our need to remember that we are salt and light in the world; that we embody the distinctive nature of those who follow Jesus (at least I hope we do). The other passage I almost preached on from this past Sunday's lectionary was the lesson from Isaiah. There is quite a bit of overlap with the Gospel in some ways. In that reading, the prophet laid out all the things God's people needed to do: offer food to the hungry, house the homeless, cloth the naked, satisfy the needs of the afflicted, etc. This would allow the nation of Israel and its people to be restored, "like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail." The prophet added, "you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in."

Formation

Lenten Contemplative Group
There's a difference between knowing about God and knowing God. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. Our group format includes chanting, centering prayer, and lectio divina. We enter and leave in silence. All are welcome to join us. While this group is being formed primarily within the Christian faith, contemplation is practiced by most faith traditions. If you're new to contemplative practice and have never practiced centering prayer and/or lectio divina before, no problem. Call Randy to schedule a 15-minute orientation before your first meeting. We will meet in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House for five Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon (March 12, 19 & 26 and April 2 and 9). Come when you can! For more information, contact Randy Siegel, 828 301-0819 or [email protected].
Wednesday Lenten Study
Beginning Wednesday, March 4 and concluding on April 8, Fr. Tom will lead This Is Your Life: A Lenten Journey. The study will focus on the different periods of our lives, through the lens of faith. The sessions will begin each week at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall, with lunch at 12:30 pm for those who can attend. All are encouraged to join the Healing Service that precedes the book study, at noon, in the historical church. Contact Fr. Tom at [email protected] for more information.
Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday class is completing a study of  Reckless Love: Jesus' Call to Love Our Neighbor During the season of Lent, the group will take up a special study using a book by Adam Hamilton entitled, The Walk: Five  Essential Practices of the Christian Life . The study begins on the first Sunday in Lent, March 1 and will continue through Palm Sunday, April 5. The class meets in the Adult Sunday school room in the Parish Hall at 10:30 am on Sunday mornings.

How do we walk with Christ - daily follow him, grow in him, and faithfully serve him? In the Gospels, Jesus modeled for us the Christian spiritual life. The apostles taught it in their writings. And the Church has, through the last 2,000 years, sought to pursue this Christian spiritual life. Deepen your walk with Christ as we explore the five essential practices of worship, study, serving, giving, and bearing witness to our faith. All adults are welcome. Books will be available in the CCF Book Shop.   For more information, contact Bob Brown at  [email protected] .
Men's Study Group

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They are currently reading, The Great Spiritual Migration by Brian D. McLaren.  The Christian story, from Genesis until now, is fundamentally about people on the move - outgrowing old, broken religious systems and embracing new, more redemptive ways of life.   If you'd like to join this study , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .

2020 Tour of Homes Kick-Off Party

The ECW Tour of Homes Kick-Off party, on February 11, was a joyous event and marked the official start the 2020 Tour of Homes season. Kudos to all who made the evening possible and to the volunteers who are going to make this the best Tour Day yet! And of course we are most grateful to our gracious hosts, Tony and Debbie Doliveira, for offering their magnificent home as the site for this year's kick-off event!

There's a job for everyone! Just contact Susie Hodges Henning at [email protected] or Tami Black at [email protected]

Mission
and Outreach

Volunteers Needed for Reading Program at Burroughs Molette Elementary School
Would you consider a volunteer opportunity that will change the life of a child? In 2015, Glynn Episcopal Ministries formed a tutoring program that does just that.  Your commitment would include a 3-5-year period with the same child at Burroughs-Molette Elementary School during the academic year. You will tutor twice each week for not more that 45 minutes using a program that is fully developed: The Barton Reading and Spelling System. You will learn how to deliver the lessons and be well prepared before beginning. Want to learn more? Contact T. Boles, member of Christ Church and program coordinator, at 231-360-9591 or at [email protected]

Two Christ Church members, Sharon Moser and Judy Lance have been tutoring in our program for more than two years. They would be happy to chat with you about their experiences.

Church Docents Needed!
With Spring just around the corner, our Afternoon Docent Team ranks are beginning to thin. Some of our members have moved away, others have had to go on leave, some prepare to fly north for the summer, and many enjoy travel plans. At the same time, busloads of visitors will begin arriving in the afternoons, eager to learn about our historic church. We could use some help!
Our docents familiarize themselves with the history of the church in order to answer questions from interested visitors; they also sell cookbooks and history booklets, and keep a few simple records. The best part is interacting with people from all over the world who have come to hear about our historic island church. We always receive more than we give!
You will receive a packet of information on the church building, history and docent duties to review, and be assigned someone to "shadow" during one or more shifts before flying solo. While some of our team enjoy working several days a month, one day of docent duty a month is all that is asked of our docents. We are open from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.
We are also looking for "greeters" to provide a second pair of hands on busy afternoons - typically mid-week.  The docent on hand would provide the history and answer questions; your job would be to direct traffic and help with cookbook and history pamphlet sales. If this job is of interest to you, we can put you to work immediately.
PLEASE CONTACT: Susan Garrett, Docent Team Leader by email:  [email protected] or phone: (912) 230-8566. The best way to know if this is for you, is to come shadow one of us - no obligation.
Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies will be packing again on Wednesday, February 19, at 1:00 pm. Mark your calendars and come help us on the assembly line! Anybody interested in helping with the set-up team before packing time is welcome to join us at 10:00 am that same morning. For more information about how you can help by sponsoring a child, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].
Join the Shepherds for Seniors
Shepherds for Seniors is a ministry to the elderly poor in Glynn County, celebrating its tenth year of service. The mission of Shepherds for Seniors is to improve the quality of life for elderly and/or disabled people who may be living below or near the poverty line. Over the years, community members have been assisted with monthly grocery gift cards, errand assistance and other non-monetary help. Please consider supporting this mission by contributing financial assistance or by becoming a volunteer. Contact The Rev. Dcn. R. V. Cate at [email protected]. More information about the program can be found here.

Runners starting time is 9:30 am and walkers begin at 10:30 am.  Please contact Diane Sheehan at [email protected] or Judy Douglas at [email protected] for more information.
Blessing of the Feet at the Bridge Run
On Saturday, February 15, clergy from the Episcopal churches of Glynn County will gather to bless the participants of this year's SGHS Bridge Run. Blessings will take place at the main stage, near the foot of the Sidney Lanier Bridge, at 6:45, 8:20, 9:15 and 10:15 am. (Fr. Tom will bless the early runners at 6:45 am and Mtr. Katie will bless walkers and other participants at 10:15 am. Clergy from other churches will do the 8:20 and 9:15 am blessings.) The Glynn County Episcopal Churches are also sponsoring a tent near the main stage and we urge all Christ Church members who are taking part in the run/walk to join us at the tent to greet fellow participants and to help us pass out blessing bracelets.
