Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter
Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

Below, please read about the Klode beach reconstruction project, which I'm happy to say will begin in a few weeks.  Your Village staff has done a tremendous job seeking grants for this project, and the majority of repair costs are from state and federal sources.

This week, summer ends for many Whitefish Bay students, a bittersweet moment for kids and parents alike.  Please use extra care and watch for students who will be walking and biking to school! -kb

Klode Park Beach Reconstruction Project:
Work will begin the week of September 13, 2021 at Whitefish Bay’s Klode Park Beach to address previous storm damage and ongoing erosion—and to help protect this beloved community resource for years to come.

In January 2020, a severe winter storm caused substantial damage to Lake Michigan’s western shoreline. The beach at Klode Park was hit particularly hard, resulting in significant erosion. The Village, in coordination with Milwaukee County, applied for and received approval for FEMA emergency disaster status, which allowed local communities to apply for emergency disaster recovery funds.

The Village then applied for and was awarded a federal disaster restoration and mitigation grant (75% FEMA funded, 12.5% Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) funded) to re-establish and further stabilize the Klode Park Beach shoreline area that had been damaged.

With approval from the Village Board, Staff contracted with SmithGroup of Madison, Wisconsin, for the design and bidding of the project, and in July 2021, the Village held a public bid opening. Payne & Dolan submitted the lowest bid of $133,180. Breakdown of the construction project funding: FEMA (75%): $99,885.00, State(12.5%): $16,647.50, Village(12.5%): $16,647.50.

Work for this project is scheduled to begin the week of September 13, 2021, and will take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting. The beach and parking lot will be closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic during construction period. Please see the attached map.

To stabilize the shoreline, large rip-rap will be placed along the back of the beach, at the bottom of the bluff. The rip-rap material will then be buried as part of the beach restoration process. Sand will be added to the slope of the bluff and to the beach, extending the dry beach area toward Lake Michigan. Any disruption to the park landscaping will be restored, and the beach will return to a pebble stone beach, once the project is complete.

If you have questions about this project, please contact John Edlebeck, P.E., Director of Public Works, at j.edlebeck@wfbvillage.org or 414-962-6690 Ext. 114.
