FEBRUARY/MARCH 2021 | ISSUE 70
The CFX Governing Board unanimously approved adjusting the maximum speed limit on a 12-mile section of SR 408 from 55 mph to 60 mph. CFX proposed the speed limit adjustment to bolster speed uniformity along the section of SR 408 from Kirkman Road to Chickasaw Trail.

After a yearlong traffic study, CFX identified that, despite enforcement, the majority of traffic on this section of SR 408 travels above the posted speed limit, creating inconsistency with those traveling at the posted 55 mph speed.

In November 2020, CFX submitted the study findings to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with a request to increase the maximum speed limit to 60 mph. CFX received approval from FDOT in December 2020. CFX staff is working to install updated speed limit signs by spring 2021. Until the new signage is in place, the posted SR 408 speed limit between Kirkman Road and Chickasaw Trail remains 55 mph.

Last year CFX completed a decade-long project to widen and improve the 12-mile northern corridor of SR 417, from the Orange/Seminole County line to the SR 528 interchange. Now, due to rapidly increasing traffic volumes, CFX will widen the 21-mile southern corridor of SR 417 from International Drive to SR 528. The project will add one lane in each direction, expanding the expressway from four to six travel lanes.

To minimize disruption to drivers and nearby residents, the widening project has been divided into 5 phases. The first of these phases, a 4.1-mile project from International Drive to John Young Parkway, began in early 2021. Additionally, at the February board meeting, construction was approved to begin in spring of 2021 for the second phase, the 3.6-mile section from John Young Parkway to Landstar Boulevard.

The full project, including all five phases, is expected to be complete in late 2023. Click here to view the project fact sheet.
This March, work will begin on SR 538/Poinciana Parkway to add a travel lane in each direction from Ronald Reagan Parkway to Cypress Parkway. This 7-mile widening project will add a travel lane in each direction, transforming the Poinciana Parkway into a divided four-lane expressway. The project will also include realigning the intersection with CR 580/Cypress Parkway at Solivita Boulevard; building a second bridge over the Reedy Creek Mitigation Bank; building new bridges at Marigold Avenue and Koa Street; and constructing two new ramps at the Marigold Avenue interchange. The project also includes the construction of four sound walls and two screening walls.

The project is expected to be complete in mid-2023. For more information on this project, visit the Poinciana Parkway Widening project page.
This year CFX will embark on a major initiative to widen the 13-mile stretch of SR 429 from Tilden Road to SR 414. Due to the scope of the project, information was presented over the course of three virtual public meetings. At all three meetings, participants were able to engage with the CFX project team and contribute comments, which CFX will consider in the final design.

At each of the meetings, attendees viewed project renderings, concepts, and fly-through videos demonstrating the new roadway configuration and planned locations for sound walls. Attendees were even able to get a glimpse of the completed project through 360° virtual tours. The widening project will add a travel lane in each direction, creating wider median shoulders to accommodate traffic during emergency events, and reconfigure exit and entrance ramps on northbound SR 429 at Plant Street/Franklin Street. Completion is anticipated in mid-2024.
