This song’s history is not clear; however, it is a sweet hymn for the advent season. The last two stanzas have a special significance for me: they reflect on the promises and hope we have in Jesus. His sacrifice was the model of love (1 John 3:1–3). He conquered death and provides eternal life for those who trust in him as their Savior. We have a heavenly home, and he is there interceding for us (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 12:2). For believers, Christ dwells within us (Matt. 28:20). As we have seen in these sweet hymns of joy, Christ’s came to save his people from their sins (Matt. 1:21).
The Son came to us in a manger, lowly for a newborn, let alone for our Heavenly Father’s Son. Jesus was on a mission, though. He was headed to Calvary. He came to die and rise again. And this is why we celebrate advent. Christmas is Christmas because of the cross, because of the resurrection. So, as you sing these sweet hymns of joy, remember the whole gospel story. Remember Christ’s birth, life, death, resurrection, ascension, and remember, he will come again.
Lord Jesus, that you would love us like the Father loves you is unfathomable. No, it is unbelievable. Yet, it is gospel truth. You took our punishment for sin in obedience to your Father, so that we can experience love and joy in him. Thank you for coming to earth, completing your mission, and now walking daily with those who are yours. What a blessed assurance. In your loving name, Amen!
