SeSo, Inc. had the honor of providing over 12 hours of interpretation/translation skill-building sessions to these wonderful bilingual school professionals from Tennessee. Our participants developed glossaries of terms specific to parent-teacher conferences, disciplinary hearings and special education meetings. We worked through Code of Ethics dilemmas, practiced our consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills, and shared sight translation, note-taking and memory-building strategies.

An additional skill-building session offered guidelines and tips to translate documents efficiently and to use formatting tools effectively. We thank school districts who invest in the professional development of their school personnel and provide them with the learning tools to support bilingual/multilingual families and educators. Congratulations to these professionals!

Expanding our Professional Interpreter in Education Network
|
|
These dedicated bilingual and multilingual professionals from twelve states will soon receive a Professional Interpreter in Education Certificate from the University of Georgia. During our 30 hours together, we celebrated professional and personal accomplishments, practiced our interpretation skills, built vocabulary banks, improved our note-taking strategies, and polished our consecutive and simultaneous interpretation skills.

Best of all, our course graduates will soon join a supportive network of over 800 interpreters from 25 states and speakers of 14 languages who have completed 30 hours of specialized training to better serve our emergent bilingual/multilingual families and schools. Thank you to the school districts that have made our courses mandatory for bilingual school personnel collaborating as interpreters! Arkansas Continues to Lead the Way!

Congratulations to a new cohort of graduates from the Arkansas Bilingual Interpreter Credential in Education (ABICE)! These bilingual and multilingual professionals will join over 150 Spanish, Marshallese and Karen speakers in Arkansas who have received 40 hours of standardized training as interpreters in education. Their credential is recognized by the Arkansas Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education and the Arkansas Department of Education Division of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). We are thrilled to see this initiative grow and expand throughout the state.

Another semester almost done and it has certainly been the hardest one yet. Pre-dissertation studies are in the approval process and I cannot wait to start analyzing data and discover common threads and themes in the world of language access and language justice in education. This journey has allowed me to interview teachers, interpreters, translators, school administrators, superintendents, and bilingual/multilingual families as they collaborate to support student achievement. The support for standardized training and a national certification process is evident and I have no doubt that we are establishing a strong framework to get it done. Our families, interpreters, translators and schools deserve nothing less.

Read about Las Sierras Academy, a school in Baton Rouge open to students who have been in the United States for two years or less. Most of the students have experienced stress and 20 percent qualify as having “interrupted formal education.” Students and their families receive support beyond academics.
