January 7, 2021

It's been a great start to 2021!  We're excited to have the students back from Christmas break.  It's hard to believe that next week, we close the 2nd marking period.  Thank you for your patience and support throughout 2020 as together we faced the challenges the year presented us.  We continue to pray for the health and safety of our YC family.

First and Foremost
IF A HOUSEHOLD MEMBER OF A STUDENT OR SCHOOL EMPLOYEE HAS BEEN TESTED AND IS WAITING FOR RESULTS, THE STUDENT OR SCHOOL EMPLOYEE MUST QUARANTINE AND MAY NOT COME TO SCHOOL UNTIL THE RESULTS ARE KNOWN.

Quarantine
When informed an immediate household member has been tested, the student or staff who resides in the same home will quarantine until the result of the test is confirmed negative. If the result of the immediate household member's test is positive, the student or staff member who resides in the same home will quarantine for 10 days.

Students or staff who may have been exposed to anyone with COVID-19 are required to quarantine for 10 days, even if the student or staff tests negative or feels healthy since symptoms may appear 2 to 10 days after exposure to the virus. Please see the latest criteria from the Centers for Disease Control on "exposure" and "quarantine."

Please be reminded, if a student tests positive for COVID-19, families are obligated to inform the school for the health and safety of the entire school community. This applies even when we are not in person or in session. Please email the school nurse at [email protected].

Student Travel
School staff and school community members will abide by the Diocese of Harrisburg requirement on quarantine for travelers to other states.  Any school staff or students traveling outside of PA are required to quarantine for 10 days. Likewise, any school staff or students entering the US from abroad (international travel) are required to quarantine for 10 days. Since international travel includes a wide range of situations, those affected bring their individual circumstances to the principal who will consult with the Secretary for Education to make a final determination.

This applies to those who have traveled outside of Pennsylvania. It does not apply to household members who did not travel out of state. However, if the individual who is under quarantine develops any signs or symptoms or has a positive test result, their close contacts, including household members, should also quarantine.

Anyone student or staff member who is required to quarantine must notify the following:

York Catholic Fund
What a year 2020 has been! As we begin 2021, we reflect back on all that has occurred over the past twelve months and the incredible community that York Catholic has supporting it. It is because of our York Catholic family that this past year has made us stronger than ever. We cannot thank you enough for your support over the last year. It is because of our generous alumni and community that we were able to continue to offer our students a top-notch education during these unprecedented times. Whether it was virtual distance learning or in-person instruction, our donors allowed YC the ability to adapt as needed to focus on what is most important -- our students.

While we know there are many choices for your charitable giving, we ask you to consider YC as a charity of choice. Each and every dollar truly counts as we continue to provide competitive academics, enriching music, arts and athletic extracurricular programs, professional development for teachers, and essential technology.

Every gift, whatever the amount, counts and is truly valued. Please use the return envelope included in your December issue of Greensleeves or click the Make a Difference DONATE button below to use our online donation page.

Thank you for supporting our future alumni!

Tax Break Time
Pennsylvania now allows individuals to take advantage of EITC Tax Credits (just as businesses can) whereby you have the opportunity to re-direct 90% of your personal state income taxes to York Catholic High School.

The Special Purpose Entity (SPE) is based on tax liability, not income, therefore each taxpayer's situation will differ. Participants must be PA residents where at least one spouse is employed or has an ownership interest in a PA for-profit business. An individual or couple filing jointly must have a state tax liability of $3,500 or more to participate. To see if you qualify for 2021, you can find your PA tax liability on Form PA-40 Line 12 of your 2020 tax return. 100% of participant contributions are distributed to the school.  You have to pay these taxes regardless, so why not have a say in how your taxes are allocated? Additionally, you will receive at least a 10% personal deduction on your federal taxes. The money you re-direct to York Catholic is for educational purposes, specifically tuition assistance.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please follow these steps:
The last day to apply for 2021 is December 1, 2021, however, the available funds may run out prior to December, so it's recommended to apply as soon as possible.

For more information about this easy tax donation, please contact Katie Seufert, York Catholic Principal, at [email protected].
Spirit Shirt Friday

Tomorrow, January 8, is Spirit Shirt Friday.  Students may pay $1 in homeroom and wear their favorite YC spirit shirt in place of their uniform shirt. Students still must wear the standard uniform pants or skirt.  All money collected from this fundraiser goes toward York Catholic's support of the Four Diamonds' fight against pediatric cancer.

Mission Collection
This January, YC will be collecting "Pennies for Life."  This is an initiative of the Harrisburg Diocese to commemorate the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by supporting the work of local pregnancy centers.  Your donations will educate people on pro-life issues and counsel post-abortive women and men. Participants are asked to donate $1 for each year of their life in thanksgiving to God for the life He has given them, and to "give life" to another person.  A baby bottle container will be placed in homerooms.  Please give generously to the Pennies for Life this January.
Thank You Collection
We as a York Catholic community would like to say thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and staff at York Hospital's Intensive Care Unit for the care they provided for Ms. Heather Hoffman when she was hospitalized with COVID-19. Because of their exemplary service, we have Ms. Hoffman with us today.

In honor of Ms. Hoffman, Mrs. Eileen McKeague has graciously volunteered her service to collect, organize, and deliver prepackaged food and drink items to these frontline workers.  The following items would be appreciated:  individually wrapped snacks such as granola bars, crackers, store-bought bags of pre-cut apples, fruit cups, pudding, energy bars, trail mix, single serve drinks such as flavored water, seltzer, Starbucks cold brew, flavored teas, etc.  We cannot accept bottled water or homemade items.  A collection box will be located at the entrances of York Catholic next week (January 11-15) for families to drop off their donations in the morning.
Virtual Christmas Concert

Due to our move to virtual distance learning in December, we postponed the Virtual Christmas Concert to January to allow for the completion of the recordings when we returned to school this week.

You can still sign-up to view the concert in January by clicking here by January 15 at 3 PM for your free virtual tickets.

The concert link will be sent the evening of Friday, January 29, and will be viewable during Catholic Schools Week, January 30-February 5. The link will not be accessible after February 5.

College & Career Update
If mid-year grades are requested by any of senior students' colleges, Mrs. Phillips will be completing the Mid-Year Report for seniors who applied through the Common Application. This will take place at the end of January as soon as mid-year grades are available. If your son or daughter applied using the college's own application, please have your senior student email Mrs. Phillips at [email protected] to request mid-year grades be sent directly to the college.
Congratulations
Juniors Ali Barta and Nate Gingerich were honored virtually by the Rotary Club of York this week.  Thirteen of our juniors competed for this honor, and Nate and Ali were selected to represent York Catholic.  They will have the opportunity to attend RYLA, a youth leadership conference held at Messiah College in June.  Congratulations!
Basketball Game Livestreams
Due to COVID restrictions, YC basketball games are not open to the public this season.  Athletes are receiving 2 tickets per home game for family members to be able to attend the home games.  Home games will be livestreamed using this link:

An agreement with all teams in the league will prohibit YC family members and fans from attending away games. Most away games will be livestreamed by the host team.  Click here for those livestream links.
Winter Sports Yard Signs

Yard signs for winter sports can be ordered until 3 PM Friday, January 15, and will be delivered to the school Friday, January 22, to be handed out at practices.  Click here to place your order.
Inclement Weather
During inclement weather that would cause a school closing or delay of schedule, York Catholic will call/text/email you through our One Call Now Emergency Notification system.  Other modes of notification include WGAL TV-8, Fox43, and the YC website.  Students from individual school districts are automatically excused if their district closes and does not provide transportation to YCHS.  The exceptions to this are Southern and Southeastern.  These students follow York Catholic's delay and closing schedule.
