Derry Township Police Dispatch Transfers to County on November 9th |
Derry Township will transfer radio and Computer Aided Dispatching from the current police dispatch center at the Derry Township Police Department (DTPD) to Dauphin County Department of Public Safety (DCDPS) on Monday, November 9, 2020.
In this new arrangement, all current services provided will remain in place, but will be divided between DTPD and DCDPS. People in need of police, fire, or emergency medical services should call 9-1-1. All emergency calls will be handled through the County dispatch center, which has been the case for many years.
DTPD will still maintain a reception/call center where people can make non-emergency calls and calls to specific officers. Non-emergency calls will be routed to the appropriate officer(s) to handle. The Reception/Call Center will be staffed Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 10:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Outside of those days and times, calls to the non-emergency phone line at (717-534-2202) will be forwarded to DCDPS when needed.
The Derry Township Police Department also has online reporting available through its website at www.derrypdcrimewatch.org for those wishing to report certain types of non-emergency incidents.
Both DTPD and DCDPS will work together to continue to provide safety and service to the community, visitors, and the officers and employees of Derry Township.

Spotted Lanternfly Season Update |
When putting lanternfly tape around trees, take an extra step to put chicken wire or small gauge wire over the exposed tape. We received many calls about bats, birds, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, baby owls, snakes, and other wildlife getting stuck to the tape on the trees. This tape is so sticky that the animal ultimately ends up dying from the stress of being stuck, or suffers wounds and loss of feathers, fur, or skin and could lead to euthanasia.

Hershey Area All Things Diversity Schedules Veterans Day Program |
Hershey Area All Things Diversity invites the community to its special Veterans Day program, Creating a Welcoming Community for Veterans, on November 11, 2020 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The virtual event will be livestreamed on the Derry Township YouTube channel. The program is free to attend but registration is requested to receive notifications about future programs. Register here: https://bit.ly/3oyrrBu
The panel will include local veterans who will discuss their experiences serving our country, as well as returning home. They will provide a unique perspective for community members who have not served in the military and may not be familiar with the difficulty of this transition, or know how to respond to someone suffering from PTSD or other issues.
Hershey Area All Things Diversity is a free series of programs to create awareness, and promote acceptance and inclusion in our community. It is coordinated by Derry Township, The Hershey Story Museum, Derry Township School District, Milton Hershey School, The Hershey Company, Penn State Health and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts.

Sand Hill Road closure update for PPL underground transmission line project |
Sand Hill Road between Forest Avenue and Cherry Drive will remain closed continuously, including this weekend, as PPL works on an underground transmission line project in this area. Local traffic will still be able to access the road, but all other motorists should follow the detour signs. Work in the section of Sand Hill Road requiring the continuous closure should be completed late next week.
Previous information from PPL incorrectly stated this section of Sand Hill would be open to traffic at night and on the weekend. PPL apologizes for any inconvenience this has caused.
Crews will be working on Sand Hill this Saturday, Oct. 31, to recover time lost to inclement weather. Crews will leave the work area by 5:30 p.m. to avoid conflicts with Trick-or-Treat in the township.
After the portion of the project requiring the continuous road closure is completed, PPL will continue its work on Sand Hill Road between Forest Avenue and Cherry Drive, with road closures from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., until sometime in mid-November.

HVFD's 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner |
The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department is pleased to announce their 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Each meal will consist of turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, dessert and a roll. The same great food as in year's past, prepared by the Volunteers of the HVFD.
Please Note: Due to Covid-19 restrictions this year, all meals are being served "To Go" and available as "drive-thru only" at the firehouse.
Serving Time is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mysterious Creature of Penn’s Woods |
November 10, 7:00pm
Manada Conservancy will host a free, online program November 10 about the Allegheny Woodrat, a tiny, secretive creature that lives in remote rocky habitat in Pennsylvania. DCNR Forestry wildlife biologist Aura Stauffer will discuss the natural history of the woodrat as well as efforts to study and conserve this threatened native woodland packrat. Hershey Area Playhouse hosts Give Back to Broadway workshop with Hello Dolly’s Jane Brockman Shew and Tim Shew |
Hershey Area Playhouse announces the next in its series of unique workshops, partnering with professionals who are currently displaced by the closing of Broadway. The Give Back to Broadway workshops pair the Playhouse with professionals from the Great White Way to benefit both.
Up next, on Monday, November 16 at 7 pm, international stage actors—and Hershey residents when they are not on tour—Jane Brockman Shew and Tim Shew will be sharing career highlights, tips for budding dramatic youth, and more. This power couple has starred in Les Misérables (Tim), Wicked (Jane), and together in the most recent tour of Hello Dolly.
Tickets to participate in the live workshop are $10, benefiting the actors and the Playhouse. If you cannot make the live event, it will be available to stream during the month of November and December.

"Stuff the Truck" at Karns |
On Saturday, November 21, Derry Township Community Cats is sponsoring “Stuff the Truck” - a supplies and donation drive - at Karns Food Store, 731 Cherry Drive from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The community is invited to donate the following cat care items to put in our truck in front of Karns: paper towels, Purina cat chow, Purina kitten chow, Fancy Feast or Friskies wet food, and Yesterday’s News cat litter. (Karns will have all of these items available for purchase). Karns gift cards and monetary donations are also greatly appreciated! This event helps to provide our program supplies for the upcoming year.
DTCC provides no cost trap, neuter and return (TNR) services for free roaming cats in Derry Township and low cost spay/neuter services for owned cats. The next two clinics for TNR are on November 10 and December 8. For owned cats, you will need to contact us three or four months in advance to get an appointment. Feed the Need 2020 Goes Virtual |
Feed the Need, the largest annual fundraiser for The Hershey Food Bank since 2012 will take place virtually this year. Not surprisingly, the number of families who rely on the services that the food bank provides has grown during the pandemic. Because Feed the Need cannot take place in-person this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, two virtual wine and food pairings will be offered instead. Carrie Elliott Reese, professional sommelier, will host a Wine and Cheese pairing, and a Wine and Chocolate pairing on Sunday, November 15th and December 6th, respectively. Tickets are $75 per person. Proceeds go directly to The Hershey Food Bank and Community Outreach. Tickets are available now. Loving Our Community Auction |
Love In the Name of Christ (INC) of Greater Hershey, a non-profit Christian outreach organization, is hosting the first online Loving Our Community Auction beginning November 9, 2020 and running through November 15, 2020. Approximately one hundred auction items will be featured including local art, one-of-a-kind jewelry, gift baskets, homemade pies, and gift cards for community restaurants and businesses. Services like acupuncture, an eye exam, doggie daycare, dog boarding, even swimming lessons will be available for bid. All proceeds from the auction benefit the ministries of Love INC serving residents of the Hershey-Hummelstown area who are in need.
