  • Families mourn loss of two Massachusetts men who drowned in Vermont lake. The families of two Massachusetts men are grieving after those men drowned while kayaking on a Vermont lake. The Vermont State Police department identified the victims as 27-year-old Aidan Connolly, of Boston’s Roslindale neighborhood, and 29-year-old Nicholas Samuels, of Weston. Nicholas Samuels was a graduate of Wayland schools, attending from Claypit Hill Elementary School through Wayland High School
  • Wayland historian's research on women and war is brought to life. For local historian Jane Sciacca, a chance meeting brought her research to life and gave a Walpole woman a deeper look into her own mother. In November, Sciacca gave a virtual presentation, “Three Wayland Women: WWI Yeomen (F), the First Women to Serve in the Military,” which focused on three women with Wayland ties who were among the first to enlist in the U.S. military. An important message from WayCAM about funding. WayCAM is committed to the needs of our community. That is why we are taking a new step in how we access information online.

The mission of WayCAM is to provide a non-profit, electronic forum for the free exchange of information and ideas which reflect the talents, skills, interests, concerns, and diversity of the Wayland Community. Whether you are watching your child play sports after the game or watching a live school committee meeting or church service on your computer, WayCAM delivers transparency and connection here in our town.

WayCAM’s primary source of funding is cable subscriptions, which are declining. Our organization is facing severe funding shortages and has seen a decline of approximately 1000 cable subscribers significantly impacting the operations of the cable studio. During the same time that cable subscriptions are decreasing, there has been an increase demand for online streaming services. Which includes the live channel streaming and On-Demand programming on our website. We are actively taking a new step to achieve the same service despite constant decreases in revenue over the past several years.

For many years, WayCAM has proudly provided online streaming services as On-Demand access to content to our community free of charge. WayCAM is honored to be a consistent pillar in the Community which was highlighted during the height of the Covid Pandemic when everything else seemed to shut down. WayCAM remained a constant, finding many ways to connect us all and share important programming to our community.

Effective this fall, please support WayCAM by welcoming our new roll out of our redesigned memberships. Each membership is modest in cost and designed for the individual viewer’s needs. We appreciate your partnership.

Troop 1 Wayland launches gofundme to raise funds for repair of vandalized Scout House. We thank everyone for their concern regarding the extensive vandalism to the Scout House.
Over a dozen extinguishers were emptied by vandals. They sprayed every single room, attic and basement. The Scout House has both standard fixed room extinguishers and our training extinguishers. As part of our emergency preparedness training (along with first aid and lifesaving training), we have each scout learn to handle an extinguisher and actually put out a fire. Unfortunately, during the destructive spree, the vandals found the training extinguishers in the attic storage and created a blizzard-like condition in the building.

The Scout House is closed due to the potential harmful effects from the fine chemical used in dry powder fire extinguishers on the lungs, skin and eyes. When we know the Scout House is completely safe, we will allow our Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, along with their highly dedicated adult volunteers to resume normal meetings and activities.

The three youth who have been arrested created damage that will require a professional cleaning crew in white jumpsuits and masks, with specialized commercial-grade vacuums with HEPA filters. Then they will use technical cleaning equipment to wipe down every surface, wall and ceiling on the main floor as well as the attic and basement.

Our standard insurance coverage does not explicitly cover this type of extensive clean-up. Therefore, we may need to divert some of our program budget for repairs along with a GO Fund Me campaign to raise the necessary funds. The professional cleaning is just over $20,000, plus damage costs to the doors, equipment and supplies. While we think there was not a lot of theft, we can’t tell what is missing because we can not see all of our equipment under the powder.

We will find a way to overcome this challenge. In fact we teach youth how to deal with tough situations and overcome obstacles (ask the scouts who camped overnight this past Feb)

When this is over, the Scout House will be better, the scouts will be better from the lessons learned from this experience, and we hope Wayland will be better.

Scouting began in Wayland 98 years ago, not our first challenge, not our last.

Please consider contributing to our Go Fund Me page. Or you can write a tax-deductible check to ‘Wayland Scouters INC ( a 501 C3 nonprofit) and mail to Wayland Scouters Inc , PO BOX 5282 , Wayland Ma 01778

Thank you for your support of youth in our community.
Wayland High School Late Night 2022. Saturday, April 30 marks the return to Wayland of a time-honored high school tradition – the Prom! The Class of 2022, who have lost so much to this pandemic, will finally get to celebrate together at the first Wayland Prom since 2019. For twenty years before the last Prom, Wayland High School parents and the local business community have come together to fund and support “Wayland High School Late Night,” a fun, supervised event for our Prom-goers and their guests immediately following the Prom. Late Night is a free, after-Prom celebration organized and chaperoned by our High School parents, designed to provide a safe and substance-free post-Prom environment. We are hoping to bring back Late Night for the Class of 2022. It is a large undertaking in a short time, but we believe this tradition is important not only to the Class of 2022, who has led our High School through two years of pandemic challenges, but to all the classes who follow and will get to enjoy these traditions in the future.

To make Late Night happen, we need your time, treasure, and talent. Late Night is 100% funded by our Wayland parents and the local business community. This event is FREE for students to make their attendance as easy as possible. All Seniors and their guests are encouraged to participate in Late Night, so we need your financial support. Because of the uncertainty around Covid-19, we started planning later than usual for this event. Donations are needed NOW to secure the entertainment and food to ensure a fun and successful event. Our goal is to raise $18,000, which will allow us to cover all of our event expenses. We are asking every family to donate $100 per Prom attendee, but any donations are welcome. Please be as generous as possible.

Tax-deductible donations should be made payable to the Wayland PTO and sent to the address below. You can also donate online here

Thank you for your support and for helping us keep the students SAFE on Prom night. Please mail checks made payable to Wayland PTO and mail to:

Overlooked and Underreported: Recognizing and Responding to Elder Abuse in Our Communities. It is hard to fathom that approximately 1 in 10 older adults experience physical, emotional, sexual, financial, and spiritual abuse. And yet, elder abuse is an issue that often goes unnoticed and unaddressed. Please join the Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable on Tuesday, May 10 at 3pm for a workshop highlighting what our communities should know about — and how we might respond to — this important issue. Presented by Safe Havens Interfaith Partnership Against Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse, this conversation will help participants strengthen their understanding of elder abuse and explore ways to work together to prevent abuse from occurring in our communities. Regardless of whether you yourself are a member of a faith community, we hope that you will come to learn more about what we all can do to create a safer, healthier community for everyone. To receive a Zoom link to this program, please register at https://tinyurl.com/DVRTMayMeeting. Your Landscape Matters: Changing the Conservation Paradigm. Extinctions of plants and animals and climate change seem like overwhelming problems but each of us can fight these crises right at home, especially by treating our home gardens as habitat to nurture the living things native to our continent.

Join MetroWest Climate Solutions on May 5 at 7pm, for a session with Claudia Thompson, founder of Grow Native Massachusetts. Thompson will illustrate how she created a home landscape rich with habitat — supporting wildlife, birds, and pollinators. More than 80 species of birds have visited or nested in her relatively small urban garden. Register at https://tinyurl.com/LandscapeMatters.

With this inspirational case study, we will learn tangible steps that all of us can take in our yards to improve the ecological health of our communities. Learn how you can become part of the climate solution — by emphasizing native plants, embracing ecological processes, and making your garden a place full of life.

Ready to add native plants to your yard? Attendees who live within five miles of Wayland, Mass. will be offered a community service garden visit by Jean Milburn, Wayland’s Native Plant Ambassador from the MCA Native Pollinator Task Force. To learn more, visit https://www.svtweb.org/mca-native-pollinator-task-force.

Poetry on the Trails. April is said to have showers that bring flowers in May, but because April is National Poetry Month, this month also brings poetry. This year, National Poetry Month brings a series of poems to the trails in Wayland. The Wayland Cultural Council, in partnership with Sudbury Valley Trustees, the Wayland Public Library, and the Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee is excited to be sharing eight poems on the trails at Greenways Conservation Area.

The poems posted along the trails were written by a diverse group of poets, but all share a common theme of spring, renewal, and rebirth. The poets included are: E. E. Cummings, M. L Smoker, Meena Alexander, Joseph Legaspi, Rita Dove, Pablo Neruda, Ada Limón, and Marge Piercy. The poems will be posted on March 30 and will remain up through the month of April.

Greenway Conservation Area is protected by a partnership between the Sudbury Valley Trustees and the Wayland Conservation Commission. The poetry will be found on SVT segments of the trails, and information about their location is on the map online here. The parking area for Greenways is at the bottom of Green Way off Cochituate Road. All the sponsors of this program encourage you to take a walk and enjoy the poems! Wayland Organic Waste (WOW) Pilot Program. The Drop off your food waste at the Transfer Station!

The Wayland DPW encourages residents to participate in the collection of compostable food waste at the Town’s Transfer Station under a new pilot composting program. If you have a Transfer Station sticker, there is no additional charge for this service.

Just as you separate cans, bottles, paper, and other recyclables that can be reused or remanufactured, now you will also be able to separate food scraps from trash so nutrient-rich materials can be responsibly turned into organic fertilizer and returned to the earth.

The compostable portion of our waste accounts for about 25% of its weight. And since we pay by the ton to have our trash hauled away and burned, every pound of water-heavy organic waste that is diverted from the trash is money saved. With the overall reduction in trash, the usage and incineration of orange PAYT plastic bags will also be reduced.

More details are online here.
The Wayland Survey on Climate Change. At the 2021 Town Meeting, we voted to declare a climate emergency and to develop a Climate Action Mobilization Plan (CAMP). In order to source climate solutions that work for the great diversity of folks in town, we need to know how you feel and think about climate change, how prepared you are for action, what questions you have, and what obstacles are in your way... Energize Wayland is running this brief survey: please fill it in, it takes 5 minutes, and is anonymous. Thank you!
In Pieces: Creative Exploration of Climate Grief, April 25, 7pm. In this participatory creative workshop we will use art materials to explore two visions of our world: one of grief and uncertainty, and the other of joy, gratitude, and beauty. We will do this on zoom, but together. This workshop is designed for adults and young adults. Join us regardless of experience or talent. Please bring your favorite pencils, watercolors, crayons, collage materials, whatever is your favorite, two pieces of paper or canvas, a pair of scissors, and a stick of glue. The workshop will last approximately one hour, with time after for more conversation, and will be led by Kaat Vander Straeten and a co-facilitator. A zoom link will be sent to you after you register here. For more info, email info@energizewayland.org. This workshop is the second of a series of events called “Creative Explorations of Climate Grief” and is sponsored by Transition Wayland, Energize Wayland, the W Gallery and the Wayland Public Library.
