Most of us have been through a multitude of changes over the last few months, and leading during times of chaos can be challenging. Like us, our students are challenged with these same issues. Many are out of work or working remotely. Some have children at home they are home-schooling or assisting with online work. Others have family members who are on the front lines that they worry about constantly. Any of these are enough to cause most people stress. In the Faculty Focus article “Leading Our Classes Through Times of Crisis with Engagement and PEACE” by Dr. Donald A. Saucier and Tucker L. Jones, M.S., we learn a few strategies that can help ease the stress and engage our students.

Here are just a few examples that are discussed:

  • Be empathetic: Understand that your students are struggling with some of these issues. Take time to understand their concerns and acknowledge them. Do the best you can to lead them through these difficult times through education and academic success!
  • Model engagement, optimism, and kindness: You are what you teach! Be sure that you are presenting the best version of yourself to your students. They look up to you and what you feed them can impact their overall success. Guide and inspire them to be their best selves as well!
