A Special Plea From the Homeless Labs!
As a foster-based rescue with no facility of our own, we rely on our volunteer foster homes to care for the homeless Labs we take in until they find their thoroughly screened forever home. Due to foster family vacations, family changes, and other circumstances, foster availability is currently limiting our ability to help more Labs this summer. We provide all medical care and support for our foster families 24/7. We have applicants waiting for our Labs, but a shortage of foster homes keeps deserving Labs from having the opportunity for a better life. Please let us know if you can foster even one lovable Lab this summer. Think of them like a special guest you're dog sitting! For more info go to Fostering for Safe Harbor.

LabFest 2019: The Countdown to August 24 Begins!
 Rescuing Labs and making them whole in body and spirit is our passion. We do our best to make sure each -- from puppy to senior -- has thorough medical care before heading to their forever home. That brings our annual medical bills to about $150,000. "Whoa, that's over ten million bones in dog money!" woofs five-year-old Ryan who was hit by a car and will be having hip surgery soon. 
So grab your Lab and any other fun-loving pups in the family! Make a difference with us at LabFest 2019 . . . and along the way meet lots of dog lovers poolside, by the BBQ, or under the Silent Auction canopies.

Dear Labby,
I'm a big girl, a really big girl who
loooves
to eat. I think I'm an English Lab and I read we can be a little heavier than our slimmer American Lab friends. When Safe Harbor rescued me I weighed 101 pounds. The vet gave me a checkup and did some tests that revealed I'm pretty healthy, just a chunky monkey. She bluntly told me: "Daisy, you're just plain fat. You should weigh 80 pounds, tops. You need to eat less, a lot less, and get some exercise. You'll feel better and live longer, too." Help! What am I going to do? I just
know
I'm going to starve.

Dear Daisy,
You have ample reserves so, no, you are not going to starve! The vet is  right: all that extra weight is hard on your heart, lungs and joints. Your family needs to measure your food, including treats, and make sure that's all you get. Period; no matter how pitifully you stare at them. To feel fuller, add veggies like green beans to your meals. Some families allow one cookie at bedtime for a special treat. Add some gradual exercise every day, too - remember you're out of shape. Daisy is currently with a foster mom who is helping her safely lose weight.

 Stefany and Chris have added a charming chocolate chap named Scooter to their family. Three-year-old Scooter is having the time of his life in his new home, and while he adores all of his family members, this lively pup's favorite partner in fun and games is his new two-legged brother, Wyatt. "Boys just want to have fun," wags young Scooter.
Scooter's new parents tell us:
Scooter has been such an amazing addition to our family! We lost our last beloved dog to illness a year ago. We finally felt ready to adopt a new pet and found Safe Harbor Lab Rescue. When we met Scooter, I knew right away that he was going to be our new family member. He is so sweet, funny, smart and well behaved. We are working on refining his manners and teaching him how to walk on a leash. The most fun part is seeing how much he and our son, Wyatt, enjoy each other! They have a blast playing together.
Thank you SHLR for connecting us with sweet Scooter, we are forever grateful!!

Volunteer Spotlight: Vikki and George
One of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue's important "jobs" is transporting the  dogs from their original destination to Alameda East for their initial checkup. Vikki and George are a pair of our regular transport volunteers. They learned about Safe Harbor Lab Rescue from a friend who is on our Board and have been transporting our Labs for almost three years. In that time, they have transported approximately 30 Labs to their new future.
Vikki and George enjoy transporting because they are helping a Lab get on his/her way to a better life. When they travel together, Vikki sits in the back on the transport so she can love on the Lab and make him/her more comfortable. They are amazed how organized the coordination between rescue partners and Safe Harbor runs. Being a piece of the rescue puzzle that brings a Lab to his/her forever home makes them happy.
