Fraternal Order of Police Meeting
December 5: PPOA members joined Fraternal Order of Police L.A. County Lodge 1 counterparts for a video conference on Saturday. All active PPOA members are FOP Lodge 1 members — this provides PPOA members with workplace legal protections through the FOP Legal Defense Plan. The LA County Lodge is one of 30 lodges in the California State FOP, and PPOA is thankful for the diligent work of State Lodge President (and former PPOA President) Roger Mayberry. PPOA Intake Representative Kevin Thompson was a participant at this monthly meeting.

Holly Mitchell Sworn in as LA County Supervisor
December 6: Holly Mitchell was sworn in as Los Angeles County Supervisor on Sunday afternoon. The former California Assemblymember and Senator defeated Herb Wesson in the November election and is now part of the first all-female LA County Board of Supervisors. President Tab Rhodes and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. attended the virtual ceremony.

George Gascón Sworn in as District Attorney
December 7: President Rhodes, Executive Board Member Robert Maus and Executive Director Quint attended the virtual swearing-in ceremony on Monday for LA County District Attorney George Gascón. The former LAPD officer and San Francisco DA now leads the largest prosecutorial office in the nation.

New Development May Impact Community College Bureau
December 7: On Monday evening, PPOA notified members of the latest development regarding Community College Bureau demobilization.

"Over the weekend, the Department was informed that the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) will put on its agenda a contract to continue services with the Department. The contract agreement will be posted on the LACCD Board agenda this Wednesday (12/9) morning and will be voted on by their Board of Trustees on December 12th. How the vote swings is unknown. We will find out Saturday (12/12)."
 

PPOA Board of Directors Meeting;
Executive Board Sworn In
December 9: The monthly PPOA Board of Directors meeting took place on Wednesday. Directors participatinincluded: Tab Rhodes, Jim Blankenship, Tony Coleman, Robert Maus, Joyce Kato, Carlos Marquez, Chris Lee, Tony Romo, John Satterfield, Jim Schallert and Ryan Vienna. Collectively, the PPOA board brings approximately 300 years of county experience to the table. 

During this meeting, PPOA directors selected the executive board members for 2021:

  • Secretary Tony Coleman
  • Treasurer Robert Maus
LASD Update on Unit Closures
December 9: On Wednesday, the Sheriff's Department issued an update regarding the status of proposed cuts to South Facility, Parks Bureau and Community College Bureau.

COVID-19 Conference With PPOA Legal Team
December 10: PPOA hosted its weekly legal meeting on Thursday in order for President Rhodes, Executive Director Quint, Senior Labor Rep. Venise Wallace, Labor Rep. Teresa O'Neil, Intake Representative Thompson and PPOA attorneys to address and analyze COVID-19 issues impacting PPOA members.
'Meet and Confer' Regarding Sergeants Promotional Exam
December 10: PPOA took part in a 'meet and confer' with LASD executives and Employee Relations representatives on Thursday in order to address the upcoming Sergeant promotional examination. Topics of discussion included COVID safety protocols and other examination issues. Participants from PPOA included President Rhodes, Board Member Jim Schallert and Executive Director Quint.
Temporary Closure of San Dimas Branch of POPA Federal Credit Union
December 11: PPOA was advised yesterday that the San Dimas branch of POPA Federal Credit Union will be closed for up to 14 consecutive days. Please visit www.popafcu.org for more information. You can also make an in-branch appointment with the other POPA Credit Union locations online or by calling (800) 369-7672.

This branch of the credit union is located in the PPOA building at 188 E. Arrow Highway in San Dimas. The office building will be closed to the public until further notice. We will advise members when the building and the credit union reopen.
