 NEW  UHMC ZOOM BOOK CLUB

The next meeting will be Friday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. Book to be discussed is Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and the teaching of plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer.

As a botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowledge together to take us on "a journey that is every bit as mythic as it is scientific, as sacred as it is historical, as clever as it is wise.

 NEW  SUMMER ON CAMPUS

As we prepare to begin our first summer school session today, Monday, May 23rd we would like to remind you of these in-person COVID-19 protocols. For complete UH guidance, please go to https://maui.hawaii.edu/health-center/coronavirus-update/

Face masks are required indoors in classrooms, shared laboratories, other instructional spaces and tightly confined educational spaces, such as advising offices and in campus venues when the number of attendees is close to maximum capacity or if it is anticipated that high numbers of higher-risk persons will be attending. Instructors or presenters may remove their masks while teaching, provided that they maintain 6 feet distance from others.

Campus officials may further specify areas where face masks are required to enhance safety.

For those returning to campus after quarantine or isolation, face masks must be worn around others in all settings, for the remainder of the 10-day period.

If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home and isolate for at least 5 days (until you are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and your symptoms are improving).

Full or Up-to-date vaccination is required for employees and students in specific UH programs or courses (medical, nursing, social work, dental hygiene, etc.) where they are embedded within partner institutions that require vaccination.

We strongly recommended that you stay home when feeling ill, whether with COVID-19 or not, to recover and prevent community spread.

If you need a COVID test, please call the Campus Health Center at 984-3493 to schedule an appointment. If you have medical insurance, please bring your medical card and ID when you come for testing. But you do not need medical insurance to get a test. The testing is free.

NEW  KA LAMA AIR CONDITIONING REPLACEMENT PROJECT

The project has been delayed and the new estimated starting date is August 2022. As most of you know, the building will have to be vacated during the construction period.

Ka Lama is our largest building on campus and not having use of this building will definitely have a significant impact, but you can rest assured that the admin team is reviewing all buildings and planning relocation to manage this major project. And the good news is, we believe that when completed, it will dramatically improve the inconsistent air flow and air quality within the building.

Please contact David Tamanaha at davidt@hawaii.edu with questions.
