Message from the Principal
Dear DHS Staff, Students, and Families,

Over the past few days, I have had the pleasure of observing students and staff engaging in community building and get-to-know-you activities as they settle into their new classes and engage in their homerooms, activities, and sports. For example, I saw a "Snowball" fight (in August!) in the courtyard which enabled students to share fun facts about themselves AND "Marble madness" which encouraged teamwork to get a marble from one side of the room to the other without dropping it. Our teachers and staff have done a wonderful job in developing new and creative ways to enable students to connect with each other, particularly after such a challenging school year last year. Even as we progress further into this school year, we will continue to focus on building a positive school culture to support our students' social-emotional and academic growth.

Open House
We are also excited to continue developing strong relationships with our parents/guardians and families! As you know, typically, each school year we host an in-person Open House to provide parents/guardians an opportunity to meet their student’s teachers and learn about the classes their students take each day. As we did last year, this year’s Open House will be virtual and pre-recorded. This format will allow all families to access the material when it works for them.

Beginning at 3:00 pm on Thursday, September 2, 2021, you will find teacher videos on the Materials Page of each course’s Schoology page If you still need to create a parent/guardian account, please check out our website for the Schoology Parent Access Guide in both English and Spanish. While we recommend you view these videos as soon as possible to learn more about your student’s teachers and classes, we will be leaving them posted until the end of the first quarter. If you have any questions or need help with Schoology or Infinite Campus, contact [email protected].

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,
Principal Kathryn Anderson

Important Reminders
Student Drop-off/Pick-up Reminders
We've made it through a week of student drop-offs and pick-ups at DHS! Shout out to our security staff and all the parents & guardians who have made this possible.

Here are just a few reminders about student drop-off/pick-up to ensure we can support and maintain a safe and efficient process:
  • Follow the directions of the security team.
  • Students should be dropped off and picked up in the designated area only. Students should not walk through the parking lot/traffic line to get to the building or meet their parent/guardian.
  • When leaving the campus, take turns to exit after the stop sign. Please do not leave your place in line unless directed by security staff, as this creates a potential safety concern.
  • Respect the Cones!

Thank you for your patience and support as we ensure all students (and families!) safely arrive and leave campus.
Academics
Building School Community
As we embark on this 2021-22 school year, we have a new opportunity to return better than when we left. We are excited that Homeroom is one part of this effort. To that end, our partnership is more valuable than ever as we work together to educate and care for our children in our district. Building our social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year. We also want to continue to build a school culture that allows for all students to achieve and feel connected to our community.

This September we will be deploying two research-backed surveys that allow us to
  • Assess students strengths and areas of need as it relates to SEL skills and competencies.
  • Assess the level to which students feel valued and affirmed in their individual and collective talents, socio-economic status, interests, abilities, social and gender identities, cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds.

The patterns and trends that come from this survey will be shared with the community.
For more information about this research-backed survey, please visit: PANORAMA
