EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #21
January 17, 2020

Dear Panther Parents,

Evans Middle School is excited to honor and celebrate Lynn Sperry, MISD School Board Member.  She has served on our board for 34 years.  She was a music teacher years ago after graduating from Ohio State.  Her favorite hobby is volunteering, which speaks to her heart and the dedication she gives back to our district.  We appreciate her more than we can express.

MLK holiday is MONDAY, January 20th.  Enjoy the 3-day weekend!!

Our 4th Annual PTO Parent Enrichment Night is Tuesday, January 21st from 6-8.  Free childcare is provided.  Our fabulous counselors will be offering sessions for you to choose from.  This is always a huge success and the feedback always positive.  Please come out and join us for the evening!!

The Great Kindness Challenge is fast approaching.  January 27-31 we will be using "The Force" of kindness (yes, Star Wars reference). We will be collecting socks and travel-sized personal hygiene products for trustedworld.org.

For all 8th grade parents:
Our counselors met with all 8th graders this week.  Registration forms for current 8th grade students are due January 27th.  There is an online course guide on MISD website if you want to take a glance.

Girls will need to wear a halter-top, sports bra or a two piece swimsuit with pants, shorts, or skirt.
Boys will wear their pants or gym shorts and only remove their shirts .

January 27th also marks the first 3-week progress report deadline.  Yes, this is a Monday which is different.  Please encourage students to check their grades and attend tutorials.  Reminder that students can still turn in assignments that contain "X"s but once it becomes a "Z" the assignment can no longer be accepted.

The Great Kindness Challenge is back January 27-31. For the 2 nd year, Evans is participating in this challenge to commit as many kind acts as possible during the week. We want to Live Kind and make kindness a way of life. We want to encourage you and your families to participate by either downloading the Great Kindness Challenge APP on your phone or visiting the website ( https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/familyedition) and printing off the kindness checklist to complete as a family. Your student will also be getting a checklist to work on individually, but wouldn't it be great to have families participate as well?

One of our acts of kindness will be to collect hygiene items for TrustedWorld.org. During the week, we will be collecting socks of all sizes and travel size toiletries (shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.). Our goal is 3,000 items. Our reward for a week of kindness and meeting our goal will be to celebrate with an extra PPT day on January 31 st.

      LEARNING COMMONS

Alan Gratz, bestselling author of
Refugee, weaves a stunning array of voices and stories into an epic tale of teamwork in the face of tyranny -- and how just one day can change the world.
June 6, 1944: The Nazis are terrorizing Europe, on their evil quest to conquer the world. The only way to stop them? The biggest, most top-secret operation ever, with the Allied nations coming together to storm German-occupied France.

Welcome to D-Day.

Dee, a young U.S. soldier, is on a boat racing toward the French coast. And Dee -- along with his brothers-in-arms -- is terrified. He feels the weight of World War II on his shoulders.

But Dee is not alone. Behind enemy lines in France, a girl named Samira works as a spy, trying to sabotage the German army. Meanwhile, paratrooper James leaps from his plane to join a daring midnight raid. And in the thick of battle, Henry, a medic, searches for lives to save.

In a breathtaking race against time, they all must fight to complete their high-stakes missions. But with betrayals and deadly risks at every turn, can the Allies do what it takes to win?

TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL

It's easier than ever for you to make a difference at Evans! We have two new ways for you to support our school while you shop, without any extra cost to you.

Do you shop at Kroger? Evans Middle School PTO is now enrolled with Kroger's Community Rewards program. If you already have a Kroger Rewards Card, log in to your account at www.kroger.com and then click Enroll. You can search for Evans Middle School PTO or enter our code, AF012. New users will need to create an account, which requires some basic information, a valid email address, and a Rewards Card. You must have a registered Kroger Rewards Card account to link it to our school. If you don't have a card, they a
re available at the customer service desk at any Kroger. Then each time you shop at Kroger, swipe your card or use the phone number related to your card. Then PTO will take the proceeds to help our students and staff!

When you shop through Amazon Smile, Evans Middle School PTO will receive 0.5% of most purchases to fund programs, events, and grants at our school. To get started, designate Evans PTO as your charitable organization by going to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-1206927. Then every time you shop, start at smile.amazon.com and our school will benefit (at no cost to you!).
Please share these ways to support Evans Middle School with friends. Thanks for your support!

      SCHOOL SAFETY

A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.

Please click the link below to view the Standard Response Protocol parent handout.

   STUDENT FOOD DELIVERY

Due to a variety of safety concerns related to food allergies and campus safety and security,  McKinney ISD will no longer allow students to utilize food delivery services at school. This includes services such as Uber Eats, Doordash and direct restaurant delivery. However, parents/guardians will still be permitted to drop food off for their children.

This rule does not apply to deliveries organized by McKinney ISD faculty or a teacher serving as a sponsor of a student organization. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for students.
