Del Mar's First Public Artwork

In 1997, Del Mar Foundation and Friends of the Del Mar Library sent out the postcard shown below, inviting Del Mar residents to preview "a model of a sculpture by the distinguished artist James Hubbell" proposed as Del Mar's first public artwork.

This art acquisition was made possible by an anonymous gift through the Del Mar Foundation, and was installed in 1999. Until now, no plaques have identified this sculpture. Two bronze plaques - one in the garden visible to those viewing the sculpture from the sidewalk, and another at the base of the sculpture - will be unveiled at the reception. And we will take a moment to enjoy this first public artwork, and celebrate the artist, the donor, and the collaborative efforts in 1997-99 that made this first public art acquisition possible.

We hope you'll join us to revisit and celebrate this sculpture, and enjoy a convivial reception with your friends and neighbors!

Warm regards,
