POP Stories of Hope
In addition to improved test scores, we get countless responses like this one from POP participants:

"This help meant so much to my parents. They were so upset that I wasn't going to be able to take dual credit classes because we simply couldn't afford it....I feel well prepared for college and have learned that I must work harder." Yareli Gutierrez

"The opportunity to take these courses has taught me the value of work ethic and time management. This opportunity will extend far beyond high school but remain a vital nerve in the spine of my education throughout life. As of the past few years my family has been hit hard. I have also been enlightened on the many blessings I have been provided that I took for granted before. These classes heightened my sense of humanity and humility." Cassandra

"This showed me that it is very possible that someone in my position can still have the opportunity to take college level courses. This opportunity means a lot to my family. Not only does Cy-Hope save my family money, but it also shows other members of my family that college is not all about having money. This has shown that there are programs out there that can help people in my position have the same opportunity."  George

"I was able to receive a college credit that will reduce the cost of my college tuition. It was also a means to challenging myself to see if I am prepared for college level coursework. My family will be able to save money for my college tuition. Taking this class has made it easier for me when I get to college because I won't have to worry about basic classes. I can focus on my major." Mikayla
March 2020

Cy-Hope places a high importance on helping students achieve college and career readiness regardless of their socio-economic status. As a result of a direct request from Lone Star College and Cy-Fair ISD, Cy-Hope created the Providing Opportunities Program (POP) to assist high-achieving, underserved students pay the fees to take Dual Credit, Advanced Placement, and Career and Technology Education courses. Through POP, 10,002 student's lives changed as Cy-Hope has given $504,657 in POP assistance to our students. Read on to discover how  Cy-Hope seeks to break the cycle of poverty by eliminating the barriers underserved high-school students face in graduating with career certifications or the college hours needed to make a four-year college degree financially feasible.
Spotlight on Providing Opportunities Program
Each year, CFISD high school counselors see students from middle and upper income families getting a head start on their college or careers by taking Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Credit (DC), and Career and Technology Education (CTE) classes. Counselors find a huge disparity in the number of college-credit class hours earned between middle and upper income students and students from impoverished families that miss out on these opportunities due to their sheer inability to pay the course fees. The students from the 38% of families living in poverty in our community face very real barriers to paying for these courses. For some, their parents must choose between paying a utility bill and filling a prescription. As much as they may want a brighter future for their children, they often do not have college on their radar.  We want to give them the same access to these classes as students from middle and upper class households. Through POP, we have helped 10,002 students so far for a total of $504,657.  In 2018, CFISD piloted a College Academy program to provide a high school curriculum that maximizes the number of Dual Credit courses a student takes and allows them to graduate with both a high school diploma and an Associate of Science degree. Cy-Hope reduced the cost of this program from $1500 to $750 for qualifying students needing economic assistance to participate. With the expansion of College Academy to eight additional schools since 2018 and the continuation of POP as a whole, Cy-Hope needs additional revenue to support the demand for and access to these classes for underserved students.  With your help , Cy-Hope can continue to provide the financial assistance necessary for underserved students to take the courses that make it much more likely they will go on to graduate from college or graduate high school with a career certification, offering a brighter future to these students and their families, and making a positive impact on our community as a whole.

Meet our Staff

Holly Calbat, Finance & Donor Relations
Holly is practically a life-long Houstonian and a 34-year resident of this area with a deep fondness for the Cy-Fair community. As a stay at home mom for many years, she quickly developed a passion for charitable work, primarily with youth and children. For many years this passion was satisfied with volunteering through National Charity League, church youth groups, mentoring and substitute teaching in Cy-Fair ISD. When Cy-Hope started, it was a natural fit for Holly to join the team.  As Cy-Hope's Director of Finance & Donor Relations, Holly has been able to combine her formal training in accounting with her passion for helping children. In her opinion, it is the best of both worlds. Her position allows her to see first hand how Cy-Hope's funds are truly making a difference in the lives of Cy-Fair ISD children. Married for thirty-five years, Holly and her husband have two adult children they are crazy about. She loves travelling, the outdoors and a good cup of coffee.
