Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

Happy Fall! Hope you and your best four-legged friend will be able to take some time to enjoy the cooler days with a walk through the Aspen trees as the leaves change color.

Remember to order your 2020 SHLR Calendar soon, very soon. They're being snatched up quicker than a Lab after a squirrel!

My Name is : Miss Kira; 5 months old

Medical Profile : Failing to thrive, damaged intestines needing emergency surgery

My Story Even though I was only five months old, I didn't feel good for a long time. I couldn't keep any food in me, was very weak and only weighed 15 pounds when Safe Harbor took me in. An ultrasound showed a portion of my intestines had folded in on itself causing a blockage. It was probably the result of parasite damage. Nine inches had to be taken out! I felt better quickly after surgery and kept my foster mom hopping with my puppy antics.  I love my forever family!

Dear Labby: Some Fall Safety and Comfort Tips!
Dear Labby,
Photo courtesy of Kateri Nelson all rights reserved.

My mom said there are some things she needs to be on top of to keep me safe and comfy as Fall and cooler weather sets in. The only think I know about being on top of is a warm bed on a cool night! What is she worrying about?

Dear Moocher,

Fall brings great smells and hikes in the Aspens, but you mom is right; there are things to be on top of (besides your bed) as the seasons change.  Here are a couple:

Antifreeze.   It's is deadly.  Thick and very sweet, it can be irresistible to some pets. And it doesn't take lapping up very much of it to be fatal. Treatment must very quick and aggressive, if we ingest it. Keep it up high, the lid on tight and check for spills and drips on garage floor.

Sore achy joints Cold weather can make our joints feel achy, especially if we've got some arthritis. Take us to the vet if we seem uncomfortable.

The very young and older get cold.  Puppies and older dogs shouldn't be left outside no matter how well-dressed. That's because they just don't have the fat, metabolism, or the full fur coat they need to stay warm when temperatures plunge.

Walking us in winter? Get reflective!  During winter's darker days and longer nights, dogs can be hard to see. Try reflective collars, or collars, tags, and leashes embedded with LED lights and blinkers. Not only will people see us, but we'll look awesome!

Stay safe, my friends!

Love,
~Labby

New Beginnings: Gerdy
After some much needed surgery, fine-tuning, and loving foster care, five-year-old Gerdy was back on four paws and ready to dance off into her forever.  This cheerful chocolate beauty soon caught the eye of Joan and John, who were looking for a special Lab girl to add to their family.  Sweet Gerdy quickly won them over and is now thoroughly enjoying starring in her second act alongside her new parents and Lab sister, with cameo appearances by Cousin Buddy.

Gerdy's new mom sent us an update and some family photos:

We are so pleased with Gerdy! She is an absolute doll! The first photo is of Gerdy with her 9-year-old sister Annie and her little cousin Buddy out for their morning walk. The second picture is Gerdy in the car. She does love her car rides, especially if we are going to Yucca Flats, an open space off-leash area for dogs!

We are so grateful to Safe Harbor and her foster family. She has definitely found her forever home!

Many thanks to Kathy and Dan for fostering Gerdy!

Hey Pup! You Got Something to Say? Tell Us About It!
Do dogs talk?  You bet they do! Through their eyes (think that "feed me" look), through their ears (think that quizzical "what are you doing" look), through their tail (think "throw the ball, throw the ball, hurry") and through their bark (think "I'm so excited").

We'd love your dog stories either in your Lab's voice or your voice to help us promote Colorado Gives Day (December 10, 2019) via our Facebook page.  For the month of November we will select and feature a few stories about your dog(s) and why they make you smile.  Stories should be no more than 200 words long, include a photo or two, and be submitted no later than October 30 to yellow4lab@comcast.net

Looking forward to your story!
