With the onset of COVID-19, our neighbors at Housing Up are in desperate need of our help. Many families work in essential positions, such as Metro attendants, sanitation workers, and grocers. Other families have been laid off or furloughed as the crisis of the pandemic hit other industries in our region. They work in positions that risk exposure to themselves and their families, or do not have income to support their basic needs. Most do not have personal transportation, and must take public transit to the grocery store, make multiple trips, and put themselves and their children at more risk of exposure. Childcare is not available, which means that the entire family is in danger, especially for single family homes. As we move into different phases of reopening, and rent and utility protections expire for our vulnerable neighbors, they will have only four months to become current in their rent before eviction begins.
St. Columba’s is Stepping in!
To kick off our partnership with Housing Up, we have pledged to create the
St. Columba’s Security Fund, raising $30K in 30 days to help 30 families with basic needs of food, safety and shelter.
Families will be able to make Instacart orders for the food that they need, and have it delivered to them from the safety of their home. Should a family be in danger of their utilities being disconnected, they will remain safe from the oppressive heat with utility assistance. W
ith rental assistance from the St. Columba’s Security Fund, t
hey will not lose their homes due to circumstances out of their control.
