International Education Week, known as I Am Global Week at Brandeis, is a U.S. Department of Education- and State-sponsored week of celebrating global awareness, cultural exchange, and learning across the United States.  To correspond with the Department of Education event, I Am Global Week at Brandeis will be scheduled for the week of November 14 - 21, 2020.

Thursday, November 5
Election Debrief Circles
10 a.m.
These spaces will be held for community to come and discuss their reactions and reflections about the Presidential election. All members of the community are welcome to attend. Spaces will be staffed by staff including Brandeis counseling team members. See "More on Debrief Circles" below for more information.

50 years of International Human Rights and Development: A Conversation with Prof. Laurence Simon
12 â€“ 1 p.m.

Laurence Simon, professor of international development at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, discusses his nearly 50 years advancing human rights and building institutions to solve problems of hunger and poverty in developing nations. Professor Rajesh Sampath will interview Professor Simon about historic and contemporary issues that are woven like a tapestry throughout Professor Simon’s career. Topics will include social exclusion and caste oppression, landlessness, failed aid programs, losses of humanitarian food aid, and pesticide poisonings among small farmers. Professor Simon will draw on brief excerpts from a forthcoming memoir to illustrate the need for a philosophy of development that avoids false generosity and instead moves us through empathy and love to the ethics of emancipation.

The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon turns these on their heads in order to combine all 209 tales into one mega-story. Classics like Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel are mixed with lesser-known tales like The Devil's Grandmother and Lean Lisa to create a fun, fast-paced, and wacky performance. After each performance, we'll be having a Q+A session with the director, Esther Daube-Valois, and the whole cast.

A virtual version of the hit coffeehouse event last year, this open mic night will be filled with tons of hilarious anecdotes and stigma-smashing stories! Come to share a period story or simply listen in to help break the menstrual stigma and push for menstrual justice.
Virtual Muslim Study Circle
8 â€“ 9 p.m.

Our Thursday night Study Circle (Halaqa) will explore a classic manual of Islamic belief and theology (aqida) called Sharh al-Kharida, written by the 18th century Egyptian scholar Imam Ahmad al-Dardir. It is a commentary on a short poem called "The Lustrous Pearl" (al-Kharida) which covers the essential points of faith that all Muslims must know. Our conversations will cover the "Big Questions" that many ask, including "does God exist?" "how is God known and described?" "does God send prophets?" "how do we know what is true, good, and right?" "what is the nature of the human being?"and so on. We will also connect these classic questions to contemporary concerns and inquiries.

Please join Muslim Chaplain Harun Spevack for Friday Prayers. If weather permits, Jum'ah will be on the Terrace outside International Lounge in Usdan. Most Fridays the bad weather location is in Alumni Lounge, Usdan. 
Students are asked to bring their own prayer rug. Contact Chaplain Spevack to let him know if you don't have a prayer rug. Please do your ablutions (wudu/abdest) before arriving, since the prayer room is currently closed.

University Writing Seminar (UWS) Workshop: Research Essay
5 â€“ 5:50 p.m.

The final installment of the UWS Workshop series will explore the research essay. A primary concern for this assignment is establishing an arguable thesis that is based on research but inspired by your personal ideas. Achieving the delicate balance between evidence and speculation that is essential for this assignment is always tricky, not just for undergraduates! In this workshop, we will focus on the outlining process [incorporating research into a rhetorical scaffolding] and the development of a strong thesis statement. Students are encouraged to join in no matter what stage they are at in the writing processes. There will be opportunity to share your work, receive feedback, and to ask questions. Best for: freshman undergraduate students; UWS students

Time Management Workshop

There are ninety-six fifteen-minute blocks in a day; how can you use them efficiently and effectively? What do you prioritize? This workshop will explore time management strategies that can help you work smarter and get more done in less time --- especially when tensions are high. We will examine different tactics you can employ to boost your productivity and discuss ways in which you can approach long-term, daunting projects and achieve long-term goals.
All are welcome, but this workshop may be especially helpful for those composing theses (senior undergraduates, Masters and PhD students) or first-year undergraduate students.
Know Your Rights Training

This training is only open to current Brandeis students. Please use your Brandeis email to
register. This event is part of the Representation and Resistance lecture series, and is generously funded by the Brandeis Arts Council. Participants will be learning about resources for dealing with law enforcement (especially during protest), including advising people of their rights when confronted by FBI agents or the Department of Homeland Security, and will also include information for non-citizens and minors.
Virtual Graduate Write-In Studio

This Write-In Studio hosted by the Brandeis University Writing Center offers graduate students a structured space to work on their long-term writing projects (for instance, dissertations, theses, or articles) and develop good writing habits like time-blocking and goal setting. A Writing Center staff member and a Brandeis Librarian will be available at every Write-in for writing, research, and citation questions that come up while you are writing. 

The Graduate Write-in Studio is scheduled every Monday, alternating between mornings and afternoons.

The foundation of community engagement is uplifting and listening to the voices of others. The Department of Community Service will be hosting 4 different virtual focus groups to learn about students' engagement (or lack thereof) in community services at Brandeis. Staff and CEAP Ambassadors will offer questions for reflection and feedback in hopes of ensuring volunteer programs are meeting the needs and expectations of our campus. Four different focus groups will be offered. If students identify with multiple identities you are welcome free to attend multiple focus groups. One $20 gift card will be raffled out per focus group discussion. Additional email surveys for students will be forthcoming throughout the semester. Please RSVP so that we can send out zoom links and offer some thoughts for you to reflect on prior to our time together. Thank you again for investing time in our community.

"Your Healing Is Killing Me"

Virginia Grise, the Mellon Foundation Playwright in Residence at Cara MĂ­a Theatre in Dallas, writes plays that are set in bars without windows, barrio rooftops and lesbian bedrooms. “The Laramie Project” is a theatrical response to the kidnapping and brutal murder in Laramie, Wyoming, of 21-year-old gay college student Matthew Shepard in 1998. Members of the Tectonic Theater Project conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of Laramie, and crafted these interviews and their own experiences in Laramie into a play that is among the most-performed in the United States.
