Serra High School Announces New Winter Schedule
Dear Serra Parents and Guardians,

We have been so gratified to have your sons back on campus over the past month. Seeing students and teachers meet in person for the first time, enjoying classmates becoming actual classmates and feeling the energy of school has been invigorating.

In the midst of implementing numerous new protocols and systems, we have been pleased with the results. Families have supported the health protocols. Teachers have adapted to a dizzying array of new protocols while keeping a focus on the well-being of your sons. The new technology has been transformative and has allowed teachers to pivot effectively between distance and hybrid environments. Importantly, health protocols have been effective.

As the county continues to respond to the pandemic and update its protocols, we are also fine- tuning our schedule. Over the past weeks, we have evaluated the implementation of the hybrid schedule for both the upper and lower division students, as well as assessed our needs for the second semester.  The learning from the last six weeks has proven that we need to make adjustments to the schedule that will create the most effective overall learning experience for the second semester. These modifications will strengthen health protocols, support the co-curricular program, and continue to ensure a rigorous college preparatory academic program.

The video linked below explains the modifications, as well as the rationale, for adjustments that will be made for the second semester.  (These modifications and the video will be posted on the school website.) In summary, the schedule will:

  1. Move from four days of instruction to five days.
  2. End the school day no later than 12:30 p.m.
  3. Have cohorts stay on campus or in distance learning for one week at a time, as opposed to switching every two days as we do now.

The transition to full hybrid in the second semester will remain as approved by the county of San Mateo.

As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Charlie McGrath
