Dear Friends,

We are so excited to have grown so much in the past year. Our round-ups of new deals, new clients and award news has grown so much, we have decided to add a second newsletter to share our phenomenal reviews, including a STELLAR New York Times Book Review for Karma Brown's RECIPE FOR A PERFECT WIFE!

We couldn't be happier to have TWO finalists on the Canada Reads stage this year and will follow up with updates on SMALL GAME HUNTING AT THE LOCAL COWARD GUN CLUB by Megan Gail Coles, and WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE by Samra Habib.

Fiction

McClelland & Stewart has acquired, in a 5-way auction, Canadian rights to two books of fiction by Journey Prize winner Shashi Bhat. The first, THE MOST PRECIOUS SUBSTANCE ON EARTH, is a darkly comic novel that, beginning in the mid-1990s, follows a young woman's tumultuous journey from high school student to high school teacher, as she learns uncomfortable truths about how women are conditioned to make themselves silent. For Fall 2021. Sold by Stephanie Sinclair

World English rights to Hannah Mary McKinnon's untitled novel, in which a man with amnesia finds his way back to his hometown only to discover he's suspected of killing his girlfriend, to Emily Ohanjanians at Mira, in a two-book deal. Sold by Carolyn Forde

World English rights to Dr. Norma Dunning's new collection, TAIMAKALAUQ sold in a two-book deal to Douglas & McIntyre by Stephanie Sinclair. Drawing on both lived experience and cultural memory, TAIMAKALAUQ brings together five powerful new short stories centred on modern-day Inuk characters in the southern areas of Canada.


Nina Berkhout World rights to Nina Berkhout's pitch-perfect second adult novel, WHY BIRDS SING--in the company of her ailing brother-in-law, his pet parrot, and a group of outspoken whistlers, a disillusioned opera singer finds her way back to music and human connection--to ECW Press for Fall 2020 sold by Stephanie Sinclair and Samantha Haywood.

World rights to UNDER THE WINTER PINES by Joanne Bischof, a dual narrative split time novel in which century-old letters from a lonely homestead wife to her missing husband give the farm's current owner the courage he needs to conquer his own heartbreak, again, to Jocelyn Bailey at Thomas Nelson, by Sandra Bishop.


US & UK rights to Shani Mootoo's POLAR VORTEX have sold to Johnny Temple at Akashic (Canadian rights previously to Book*hug). In Shani's latest novel a lesbian couple receive an unexpected visit from an old male friend, throwing questions of true intentions into the mix of their previously monogamous commitment. Narrated in stream-of-consciousness reminiscent of Mrs. Dalloway, this impressive novel is perfect for readers of Herman Koch and Rachel Cusk. Sold by Samantha Haywood.

Canada English rights to Cree and Metis comedian and writer Dawn Dumont's THE TOUR, a hilarious retelling loosely based on the true story of a group of First Nation dancers that left Saskatchewan and toured through Europe in the early 1970s, perfect for fans of David Sedaris, to Freehand Books by Stephanie Sinclair.

Martha Baillie Audio rights to Giller-nominated author Martha Baillie's THE SEARCH FOR HEINRICH SCHLOGEL, about a young man who escapes the claustrophobia of small-town Germany to hike the interior of Baffin Island, Canada, only to discover on his return that thirty years have vanished and time has sped forward to 2010, sold to ECW Press by Samantha Haywood and Stephanie Sinclair.

Australia and New Zealand rights to bestselling author Kate Hilton's BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME, for readers of Karen Joy Fowler and fans of the hit TV show This Is Us, a brilliant generational comedy tracing one family's eventful year tackling the realities of midlife-aging parents, raging teens, crumbling marriages and bodies and hearts-all in the pursuit of happiness (or something like it), to Allen & Unwin Australia by Samantha Haywood and Stephanie Sinclair.

Non-Fiction

World English rights to artist  Ben Nadler 's  THE JEWISH DELI: A User's Guide , a fully illustrated nonfiction guide to the delicious delights to be found behind the counters of Jewish delicatessens, and the stories and culture surrounding it, sold to Steve Mockus at Chronicle, for publication in fall 2021, in a deal arranged by  Samantha Haywood .

North American  rights to Alessandra Naccarato 's debut essay collection, IMMINENT DOMAINS , a lyric collection exploring risk, change and the natural world; from volcanic eruptions to tropical storms, these essays follow the author into dramatic, evolving landscapes, to Book*hug Press by Stephanie Sinclair for Fall 2021.

Canada English rights to LIKENESS: Fathers, sons, a portrait by David Macfarlane  sold to Martha Kanya-Forstner of Doubleday Canada for fall 2020 publication, by Samantha Haywood.  A sometimes funny, sometimes heart-breaking family memoir inspired by a painting. Partly a picture of a place, partly a portrait of the author, Likeness explores the colourful swirls of connection between birth and death, youth and age, happiness and unbearable tragedy.

US rights to the youngest-ever winner of the Griffin Poetry Prize Billy-Ray Belcourt's A HISTORY OF MY BRIEF BODY, a meditation on grief, joy, love, and sex at the intersection of indigeneity and queerness, to Two Dollar Radio by Stephanie Sinclair. Previous rights sold to Hamish Hamilton Canada for Summer 2020.

US rights to National Magazine Award winner and 2017-2018 Geoffrey, Margaret Andrew Fellow and Tuscarora writer Alicia Elliott's narrative nonfiction debut, A MIND SPREAD OUT ON THE GROUND, exploring the links of colonialism, mental illness, art and abuse, through a blend of cultural criticism and personal narrative, sold to Melville House by Stephanie Sinclair and Samantha Haywood. Canadian rights previously sold to Doubleday Canada.

World rights to founding member of the wildly successful band Great Big Sea Séan McCann's memoir ONE GOOD REASON: A Memoir of Addiction and Recovery, Music and Love, which tells Séan McCann's timely, brave and inspiring story which follows his journey of childhood molestation at the hands of his parish priest to fame and success as a musician with Great Big Sea, to becoming a mental health and recovery advocate, speaker, and abuse and addiction survivor, to Whitney Moran at Nimbus, by Samantha Haywood. 

World English Language rights to PURR: The Science of Making Your Cat Happy by Dr. Zazie Todd, PhD.  A companion to WAG, this book will look at the science of all aspects of caring for a cat, from the development of kittens to the importance of play, and from setting the house up to what cats dream about. PURR draws on the field of feline science, which has taken off over the last decade, to explore the ways in which it can be applied to everyday life. PURR will give readers a better understanding of their cat's behavior and of what their cat needs. Readers will learn how to tell when their cat is happy and content, and when there is something they could fix. To Rob Sanders at Greystone Books for Spring 2021 publication by Fiona Kenshole.

Awards and Citations

CROW WINTER by Karen McBride, FRYING PLANTAIN by Zalika Reid-Benta, and A MIND SPREAD OUT ON THE GROUND by Alicia Elliott have all been shortlisted for the 2020 Evergreen Award! Administered by the Ontario Library Association, the Evergreen Award is part of the Forest of Reading Awards Program which recognizes the best work by Canadian authors and illustrators. Over a quarter of a million readers participate in the program through schools, public libraries, literacy centres and within their homes. These awards encourage a love of reading through programs aimed at children and adults who vote for the winning books.

Zalika Reid-Benta's FRYING PLANTAIN was the Cityline Book Club pick for November. Cityline is the longest running women's daytime show in North America

We are thrilled to see contemporary Indigenous stories receiving well-deserved recognition,  as is the case with the recent Toronto Star list, "Five new Indigenous books to learn from, dream to, live by," which features CROW WINTER by Karen McBride and PEACE AND GOOD ORDER: The Case for Indigenous Justice in Canada by Harold R. Johnson .

Sarah Leavitt's AGNES MURDERESS (Freehand Press) has received a litany of fantastic press following publication in Fall 2019! CBC Books has named it one of "13 creepy Canadian books to read on Halloween" listed it among "15 Canadian comics to watch for this fall" included it on "The CBC Books fall reading list" and named if one of the best Canadian comis of 2019! 

Elsewhere,  AGNES MURDERESS  was also part of a Globe and Mail feature listing the best twelve books from independent publishers to add to your 2020 reading list, featured by   Georgia Straight featured in a round-up of bold graphic novels, it was spotlighted on the AllLitUp blog in their Beautiful Books series, and Sarah Leavitt herself was interviewed on  CBC's North by Northwest. New Clients 

Cody Caetano is a writer with work in Beatroute, PRISM International, Bad Nudes, Hart House Review, and elsewhere. His debut chapbook, Pleasure Dome Poems, was released via Knife/Fork/Book in 2019, which Billy-Ray Belcourt described as "slippery and agile and revisionist and campy and ethical and ultra contemporary." In 2019, Cody graduated with an MA in English in the field of Creative Writing from the University of Toronto, where he wrote a memoir under the mentorship of Stó:lō writer Lee Maracle, entitled HALF-BADS IN WHITE REGALIA.  Cody is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.
 
Christina Crook's first book, The Joy of Missing Out: Finding Balance in a Wired World, helped pioneer the field of digital well-being and established her as a leading voice on technology and human flourishing. Her commentary has appeared in international media, including The New York Times, Psychology Today, BBC.com and, Glamor Brasil. Christina hosts the JOMO(cast) podcast, which features founders, creators and thought leaders embracing the joy of missing out to thrive in a rapidly-changing world. Her writing has appeared in Utne Reader, the Literary Review of Canada and CBC.ca.  Christina is represented by Samantha Haywood.

Libbie Hawker Bestselling Author Libbie Hawker/Olivia Hawker will write literary fiction under the pen name Libby Grant. Her forthcoming historical novel about the founding of the Mormon religion, from the perspective of the Prophet's first wife Emma Smith is reminiscent of Hilary Mantel and Rachel Kaddish and will be available for consideration soon. Libbie is represented by Carolyn Forde.



Sonja Larsen's memoir Red Star Tattoo: My Life As A Girl Revolutionary (Random House Canada) was shortlisted for the 2016 Hilary Weston Writers Trust Non-Fiction Award and received the 2017 Edna Staebler Non-Fiction award. Her work has appeared in literary publications in the US, Canada and the UK. She is currently working on her second book, Click OK to Continue, about her experiences running a computer lab in an inner-city community centre. She lives in Vancouver BC. Sonja is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.

A longtime book editor at Penguin Random House Canada and now Page Two, Amanda Lewis's first book, Tracking Giants (Greystone Books, Fall 2021), is a travelogue/memoir about searching for the Champion trees of British Columbia and revealing the best and biggest parts of ourselves in the process.  Amanda is the co-founder and Literary Director of The Reading Line, a unique literary festival on two wheels. Born in Ireland, she now lives in unceded territories on the west coast of Canada. Amanda is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.

Sophie McCreesh is a fiction writer living in Toronto. She completed an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Her writing has appeared in Peach Mag, Bad Dog Review, Bad Nudes, Hobart, the Minola Review, Cosmonauts Avenue, and elsewhere. Her novel follows a young artist named Jane as she navigates her own understanding of the isolation, depression and the limits of connection through technology. Her most important relationships--that with another artist named Kitty and with a discredited therapist named Anna--begin to deteriorate as Jane's personal devastation becomes prevalent. This grief translates to a desire to create outside her own medium but maybe more so outside the repetition of her own memories. The book follows Jane and Kitty's respective artistic practices as they collaborate to show their work at a competition in England.  Sophie is represented by Samantha Haywood.

Susan Meyers is an Associate Professor, English Director, Creative Writing Program at Seattle University. Meyers has published in Calyx, Dogwood, Oregon Humanities Journal, Wilderness House Literary Review, Rosebud Literary Magazine, The Minnesota Review, WomenArts Quarterly Journal, Gender and Education, and Community Literacy Journal. Her wonderful debut novel MIDNIGHT TIGHTROPE, which is loosely based on her own Grandmother's life in the circus in the early part of the 20th century will be available for consideration soon. Monique Monnier-Jones grew up in a tiny town along Bayou Lafourche and is a graduate of Nicholls State University with degrees in English and Biology. When not tapping away at her keyboard, she can be found mountain biking, gardening, tending her small farm and wandering the woods. She lives with her husband, children and a menagerie of rescued animals in the middle of the swamp in South Louisiana. Yasin Osman is an award-winning Toronto-based photographer and visual storyteller who specializes in capturing evocative images of the living world. In 2017, Osman traveled to Somalia to collaborate with #LoveArmy, a humanitarian organization founded by Jerome Jarre, Casey Neistat, Ben Stiller & Chaka. During his time there he collaborated with world renowned artist JR, and Osman's photos were pasted onto multiple water trucks all over the country. Additionally, he has worked with UNICEF, MacLeans Magazine and VICE. Through social media platforms Instagram & 500px Osman has accumulated over 200,000 followers, and told powerful stories of marginalization, culture and religion. Yasin's stunning debut photographic collection, DEAR AYEEYO, is now available for consideration. Yasin is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.

Andrew F. Sullivan is from Oshawa, Ontario. He is the author of the novel Waste (Dzanc Books), named a Best Book of the Year by The Globe & Mail, The Walrus and CBC Books in 2016. His short story collection All We Want is Everything (ARP Books) was shortlisted for the ReLit Award for Short Fiction and named a Best Book of the Year by The Globe & Mail in 2013. Sullivan's fiction has been repeatedly shortlisted for the National Magazine Awards and his work has appeared in Hazlitt, The Globe & Mail, The New Quarterly, and other publications. Sullivan now lives in Toronto, where he works for an urban planning and design firm. Andrew is represented by Stephanie Sinclair.

Katherine F. Swann lives in Atlanta with her husband, two sons, and dog Ollie. She graduated from Washington and Lee University and then obtained a master's degree from the University of Georgia and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. When she's not working, reading, writing, or driving kids around, she's drinking wine and binge-watching Mindhunter or The Crown. Katherine writes commercial women's fiction. Meredith Vuchnich is an award-winning film and TV screenwriter. She co-wrote the feature film screenplay Beans, an Indigenous coming-of-age story set during the 1990 Oka Crisis, with the film's director Tracey Deer. They won the TIFF-CBC Films Screenwriter Award for the screenplay. Beans will be released theatrically in the fall of 2020.  In TV, Meredith has written and produced for one-hour dramas (Remedy, Carter, ReGenesis, Wild Roses, Godiva's), half-hour dramedy and developed original dramatic series. She was nominated for a Gemini Award for Best Writer in a Dramatic Series for ReGenesis in 2008.  A writer as well as a busy mom, Meredith had two consecutive concussions and managed post-concussive syndrome for four years. She is currently working on a novel entitled Concussion Mom, inspired by her own experiences.  She has a M.A in Theatre from Northwestern University and graduated from the competitive and life-changing Canadian Film Centre TV Writing Programme. She lives in Toronto with her husband and three children. For kicks, she writes and performs music as part of the pop-folk duo, The Neighbourlys.  Meredith is represented by Samantha Haywood
