Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Psalm 51:10-12
A Call to Restoration
Have you ever watched the TV show “American Pickers?” Two friends travel the country, looking for lost treasure. But the treasure isn’t easy to find. The pickers walk through dangerous attics and collapsing sheds, all while battling sticky spider webs and intense heat. Once in a while, they see something they like, and they get excited. They haggle with the owner and when they agree, they take it home to sell or have restored. What looks like a dirty old rusty hunk of junk , emerges as sparkly motorcycle. What first appears to be a rotting old toy, returns as a beautiful piece of historic art.
Our Lord Jesus Christ finds us in the junk heap, covered in pride-filled grime, and caked in rebellious mud - lost and condemned. But he picks us out of sin, and redeems us from our sin, and death, and from the power of the devil; but he doesn’t buy us with a credit card, or a check, or even cash. It was much more expensive. Jesus bought us with His holy, precious blood and His innocent suffering and death. You are picked!
In Christ, God does something remarkable. He restores you - not to what you were, or to what you could be, but to who God says you are…. A child of God, fully forgiven, fully redeemed, fully loved, fully restored.
What brings us peace is that God does it all. He picks, He purchases, He restores. We simply delight in the One who picked us and glorify Him today.
See you Sunday I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
