THE ARIZONA CIVIL ENGINEER
Volume 97 Issue 6 - March/April
Hello ASCE Arizona Section Members,
I wanted to share with you all a heartwarming email we received recently. The email read “My daughter wanted to thank you for the award you gave her at the 2022 SARSEF. She was very excited about it and very appreciative. It was inspiring for her work protecting trash cans from marauding javelina to be recognized.” The email was accompanied by the wonderful photo on the right.

It is moments like these that remind me why we do what we do at ASCE. Not only do we build safe and functioning communities, but through our volunteer work we also inspire the next generation of civil engineers. So I wanted to take the time to thank YOU, yes YOU, for all the work that you do to make our communities better today and for years to come.
I know our engineering work sometimes goes unnoticed (especially if your work is underground) so I am here to remind you how awesome you are. Cities would not exist without you and we need to make sure that we have civil engineers when you and I retire.

Speaking of cities, infrastructure has been a hot topic lately, especially since the IIJA passed (wohoo!) so let's keep the momentum going and bring awareness to our profession and our infrastructure. Another exciting event is coming up which is "United for Infrastructure" happening May 16-20, 2022 so click here to find out more.
Thank you for everything that you do,

Recap of March Luncheon Meeting
On March 9 the Phoenix Branch gathered for our first in person lunch meeting in more than two years, with a great turnout of over 50 attendees. At this meeting, the Board acknowledged the two projects of the year, our newest Phoenix Branch Life Members and the four 2022 Life Member Scholarship recipients.
Following the award announcements, the Under $10 million Project of the Year, the Arizona Water Company’s Mogollon Well #5 Arsenic Removal Facility, gave a presentation on this important project to the Overgaard Water System. A thanks to Bill Prater of the Arizona Water Company and Frederick Tack of GHS for sharing their insight on this project. A copy of the PowerPoint presentation is available and can be requested from any of the Board Members.
Branch Awards and Announcements
The following are the Phoenix Branch’s 2022 Projects of the Year awardees, new Life Members and Life Member Scholarship recipients.

Every year the Phoenix Branch seeks to honor and recognize outstanding engineers and their projects within the Phoenix Branch area.
Project of the Year, Under $10 Million
Mogollon Well No. 5, Arsenic Removal Facility
Owner: Arizona Water Company
Designer: GHC
Contractor: Fann Environmental
Construction Cost: $2,800,000
The Arizona Water Company Mogollon Well 5 Arsenic Removal Facility project is a comprehensive engineering accomplishment that proactively improved the water quality and resiliency which serves 40 percent of the water system in Overgaard, Arizona, consisting of over 4,500 service connections.
Project of the Year, Over $10 Million
Phoenix Convention Center Permanent Shoring Wall Replacement
Owner: City of Phoenix
Designer: Gannett Fleming
Contractor: DNG Construction
Construction Cost: $20,000,000
The Phoenix Convention Center Permanent Shoring Wall Replacement project began as a typical inspection project and evolved into a much larger need for safety modifications. The temporary basement soil shoring wall had to be replaced with a permanent structure. This was no easy task when the work area ran in a narrow space between an active convention center on one side and light rail tracks on the other. Downtown urban development, the active convention center, and a narrow workspace to replace a soil shoring wall made it a challenging project. In addition, all construction work would need to avoid many critical utilities within the 45’ deep excavation corridor.
