Inclusion Day at Akron Zoo

Summit DD and the Akron Zoo have partnered for Inclusion Day at Zoo, in celebration of March DD Awareness Month. Simply wear orange (the color of inclusion) and get FREE admission when you visit the zoo on March 2nd! Summit DD Developmental Specialists will also be on site providing FREE developmental screenings for children from birth to age three. These screenings take the guesswork out of knowing if your child is meeting developmental milestones. Parking is only $3.

Lorain County Resource Fair
Connecting for Kids will again be teaming with Leadership Lorain County to present the Lorain County Resource Fair on Thursday, March 12, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the John A. Spitzer Conference Center, 1005 N. Abbe Rd. in Elyria. At the 2020 event, families will find resources for anxiety, ADHD, communication/speech issues, behavior problems, IEP support and social skills deficits for individuals ages birth – 22 years.

Back by popular demand is a free shuttle service, a free pasta dinner and on-site Spanish translation.
In fact, the Lorain County Resource Fair serves as the kick-off event for the new Connecting for Kids Spanish Initiative.
“Our new Spanish speaking Family Resource Specialist, Andrea Campesino, will be available at the event to assist those in the Hispanic community find resources and serve as a translator with vendors,” said Sarah Rintamaki, Executive Director of Connecting for Kids. “Andrea is eager to meet area families as she will be hosting our first support group entirely in Spanish the evening of March 26 at the Elyria Public Library.”
All families attending The Lorain County Resource Fair will have the opportunity to meet with providers from across Northeast Ohio, including:
● Adapted recreation programs and camps
● Alternative schools
● Counselors and mental health providers
● Educational advocates
● Grant/financial aid providers
● Music therapy programs
● Occupational and physical therapists
● Respite providers
● Speech-language pathologists
● Social skills programs
● Transition, job training and housing providers
● Tutors and learning disability programs
“We at Leadership Lorain County are so extremely excited regarding this collaboration with Connecting for Kids. While it was the “Best Class of 2015” who initially brought the Special Needs Resource to Lorain County, it has definitely been through the efforts of Connecting for Kids that it has been taken to the next level. We are happy to partner as it continues to grow. The alliance of resources in one location has certainly impacted many in our community, together we are all creating positive change,” said Julie Cruz Blair, Executive Director of Leadership Lorain County.

Buddy Break is a FREE Parents' Day Out/respite program where kids with all types of special needs have FUN with games, music, crafts and more. Meanwhile, parents get a break from their ongoing care-giving responsibilities. this program is provided through partnership with Nathaniel's Hope and local churches.

Join us for our free Transition Booster Sessions in the Portage County Area. These sessions are for parents, caregivers, or professionals working with youth and young adults who have developmental disabilities and/or special health care needs.
 
  • ATTENDEES WILL:Explore tools and resources to help plan for, obtain, and maintain community employment, including Pre-Employment transition Services (pre-ETS)
  • Learn a person-centered and outcome-focused manner for preparing students and young adult(14 and up) for community jobs
  • Receive an agency overview of Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) and Vocational Rehabilitation
