U.S. INNOVATION COMPETITIVENESS SUMMIT
SEPTEMBER 13-17, 2021
Virtual Summit hosted by UK Innovate, Center for Strategic and International Studies, AUTM and Columbia Technology Ventures.
"America faces two great economic challenges in the coming years. The first concerns ensuring our country’s leadership role as a world-class innovator second to none. During the heyday of American innovation, this country was an undisputed global leader in science and technology. However, in the past decades, we have seen in- creasing challenges that have hindered our role as a generator of cutting-edge science and the translation of those innovations into products and services that save and improve human lives, as well as generate taxes, jobs, and exports. Meanwhile, other nations have upped their game tremendously and may be poised to overtake the United States as the world’s great innovators in the years ahead. We need to actively engage in improving our country’s competitiveness by boosting regional innovation hubs, strengthening the foundations of intellectual property (IP) rights, and maximizing efficiency in translating innovations to market." -John Hamre, President & CEO, Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS)
The Summit will involve critical conversations from the nation’s most prominent experts in science policy, technology transfer, IP policy, and venture capital investments, including the following confirmed speakers:

Lignin-Derived Antimicrobial Agents for Treating Bacterial Spot in Tomato, Pepper and Pimento Crops
UK researchers are developing a method of breaking down lignin to produce lignin oils that can be used as antimicrobials against plant pathogens such as Xanthomonas. Lignin is a complex polymer that is found in the cell walls of plants and contribute to their rigid structure. The paper and biofuel industries produce more than 50 million tons of lignin waste every year, which makes lignin a cheap and sustainable material.
This technology provides a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to pesticides.
