Fire Station 4 Walnut Creek
Community Meeting Recap
Thank you for your interest in Fire Station 4.

At our February 10th Zoom Community Meeting, Chief Lewis Broschard shared that the Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ConFire) is planning to reopen Fire Station 4 in July of 2022. For those individuals who were unable to attend the meeting, you can view the recording here.

Fire Station 4 was closed during the Great Recession along with several other stations throughout the District. Since then, ConFire has been rebuilding the organization into a sustainable fire service. In order to reopen Fire Station 4, there are several things that need to occur.

There won’t be sufficient funding for the station until July of 2022, when the final debt payment of the Pension Obligation Bonds will be paid off. At that time, ConFire is projected to have another $11-13 million added to their budget. This added amount will allow them to reopen and support the staffing of a new station.

The Station 4 firehouse was built in 1956 and is one of the oldest buildings in the district. It needs significant refurbishment before a station crew can be housed. Approximately $250,000 to $300,000 will be spent on building improvements like heavy carpeting and painting, a kitchen remodel, a bathroom remodel and a new roof.

In addition, a new fire engine will need to be ordered. ConFire is planning to order 4 new fire engines in May of 2021, which takes 12 to 15 months to receive. There will be 1 engine posted at Fire Station 4.

In order to staff a station with one engine, 9 people are required. There are 3 individuals on each shift. ConFire will have two academies: one in October 2021 and another in March 2022. These academies will help to meet the staffing needs across the Fire District.

The current tenant at Fire Station 4 is the Walnut Creek Bomb Squad and they are working on moving to an alternative location.

I have added Fire Station 4 information on my website for easy access. I will make quarterly updates on the progress of this station as we move towards reopening.

I hope you and your family remain safe during this time.

Sincerely,

Karen Mitchoff
