First Lego League Team Wins!

Our First Lego League team competed last Saturday after weeks of preparation. Their best robot game was the last one of the day, where they hit all but one of their missions and scored 255 points, which put them in 3rd place out of the 10 teams in their division. In the end, they won first place for best robot design!!

Thank you to Kathleen Olowin, Mr. Smith and Ms. Barbour and all of the parents for supporting the team this year!!
Casting Call!

We are starting preparations for this year's Spring Musical, Return to the Forbidden Planet. It is a version of The Tempest in the style of a 1960's Sci-Fi B movie, with a soundtrack of classic 60's rock and roll - we are anticipating that it will be a lot of fun! Involvement is open to all students from 2nd-8th Grade.

As last year, we will hold auditions for main parts, with an open signup for chorus parts and design/technical/backstage roles. Please contact either Ms Saunders or Ms Colleen if your child is interested in chorus or backstage support. Any middle school students signed up for the Stage Design enrichment course will automatically be involved in the design process, although involvement backstage during the performances is optional.

Auditions will be held on Monday, December 2nd and Tuesday, December 3rd after school in the Drama room, with additional slots during some recess times that week. Students interested in auditioning should sign up on the sheets which will be posted outside the Drama room during the preceding week. If students are not offered a part after auditioning they are very welcome to sign up for the chorus. Audition scripts will also be left outside the Drama room for students to pick up. Please note that there is NO EXPECTATION that students memorize the scripts, it just helps for them to have a chance to familiarize themselves with it before the audition. Students should also be ready to sing a short extract of a song, ideally one in the genre of the music in the production (for example a Beatles song), but Happy Birthday will be just fine.

Rehearsals will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, and during the day on either Saturday or Sunday, and will start once school resumes in January. If your child is offered a part please let us know if there are weekend times or dates they are unavailable. Each week students required for rehearsals will be contacted by email - they will not be expected to attend all rehearsals. Please note that during the last week there may be additional rehearsals outside of regular times. The performance dates are Thursday, April 16th during the school day and the evening of Friday, April 17th.

Please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Colleen or Ms. Saunders with any questions!
Celtic Fiddler entertains!

Last Wednesday we had Colin MacLeod, a Celtic fiddler, come and perform some story concerts for our lower schoolers. Colin had them dancing around and engaging with his music and tales. Students and teachers alike had a ton of fun engaging with Colin and his music. This was an exciting opportunity for our lower school students to learn about a different style of violin playing, and for our Beginning Strings class to engage with playing by ear for the first time!
Science Collaboration

The Renaissance High School's Synthetic Biology class visited our 8th grade Biology class this week to talk about how scientists construct genetic tools for use in research and industrial applications. This is the first part of our collaboration with The Renaissance School. Later in the year, our 8th grade will be traveling to their campus to construct and insert their very own genetically engineered tools into bacteria cells.

Middle School Cell Phone Survey

A common question we get from parents at Peabody is when should I get my child a phone? Of course, this is family preference and there are many reasons why families make the decision to provide or not provide a cell phone to their child. We recently surveyed our Middle School students to see what our current families are doing related to cell phone use. Please click on the graphic to see the results!
