Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, gave a presentation March 15 on Media in Russia for the Today in International Politics: Speaker Series (TIPSS), a program for teachers of AP Comparative Government. The presentation included speakers on several countries and had more than 100 attendees.

Associate Professor Hong Vu was a discussant for a panel on Theorizing Misinformation at the Misinformation and Global Communication Symposium organized in Beijing, China, as part of the launching ceremony of the Online Media and Global Communication on March 12. Vu, doctoral student Nhung Nguyen, and their collaborators also had an extended abstract titled “Dealing with Misinformation on COVID:19: Comparing the Use of Transparency and Accessibility in Fact-checking Practices across 74 countries” accepted to the symposium.

Doctoral candidate Muhammad Ittefaq’s study titled “Social media use for health, cultural characteristics, and demographics: A survey of Pakistani millennials” has been accepted for publication in Digital Health Journal. The study analyzes what motivates people in Pakistan to use social media for health and how their cultural characteristics influence their social media use in this area. Ittefaq's co-authors on this study are Professor Hyunjin Seo and doctoral students Mauryne Abwao and Annalise Baines.
Call for proposals for 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award
The school's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee announces a Call for Proposals for the 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award. The $5,000 research award, which is open to faculty and graduate students, aims to promote applied research in an area of mass communication science that can directly benefit our understanding, acknowledgment, interaction with, research, and/or acceptance of diversity. The call for proposals and detailed instructions about the submission and review process can be found here. Media Arts & Production, a new concentration in the J-School, will start in Fall 2022. The Media Arts concentration empowers students to explore and develop as creative media producers and storytellers, media and audience researchers, critical thinkers and enterprise leaders in an ever-evolving media environment. “Liberate LFK: The Past, Present and Future of LGBTQ+ Activism at KU,” a documentary by students in Assistant Professor Rebekka Schlichting's fall documentary class, will be screened at the Free State Festival at 12:30 p.m. April 16. Learn more here.

Ad 2 Kansas City, an advertising and marketing community organization with KC Ad Club, is hosting a livestream event with sports marketing professionals on April 7. Lara Krug, chief marketing officer for the Kansas City Chiefs, will be the keynote speaker. Representatives from the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current and Sporting KC also will participate on the panel to discuss sports influence marketing and advertising and the impact of social media in sports. Fulbright Germany is offering its Berlin Capital Program for early-career American journalists and journalism students in September 2022. The program offers an opportunity to delve into transatlantic issues, gain valuable cultural insights, expand professional networks, and develop skills for better “translating” the news of Europe to a U.S. audience. Full scholarships are available. Deadline is today.

The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is a 12-week, paid fellowship program at a Hearst Television station. Applicants must be completing their senior year of college or graduate school and be graduating in the summer of 2022 (May-August). They must have demonstrated an interest in and ability to produce news, either for television, radio or online, excellent writing skills, a demonstrated ability to produce a newscast, and a good base of editorial judgment. Applicants must have a strong academic record and two recommendations from faculty or internship supervisors. They must be willing to spend 12 weeks post-graduation at a Hearst television station of the company’s choosing and be willing to relocate to an appointed employing Hearst station after finishing the program. Get free food and compete for prizes at Wall Street Wednesdays
The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Flip'd for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal the previous week. This is followed by a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The next event is March 23. Learn more and register here.

Funded by a grant, the project will study how young adults make decisions when they have the autonomy to manage their own health care.
