Eisenhower Statue Unveiling

Join in the "Ike"citement!
The unveiling of a statue of Dwight D. Eisenhower will at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 22 at the Kansas State Capitol.
The 7-foot bronze statue of Eisenhower as a five-star general is mounted on a 3-foot granite base.
Other attractions on Kansas State Capitol grounds include: Statue of Liberty Replica, Kansas Law Enforcement Memorial, Abraham Lincoln Statue, Pioneer Women's Memorial, Kansas Veterans Memorial and Walk and the Kansas Walk of Honor.
Seating is limited, so please email attendance to [email protected]. We will submit Abilene's headcount to the Department of Administration.

Even though the Museum is being renovated, the exhibits in the Library were excellent and I did not feel cheated in the least. They clearly made good solid plans for the renovation period and created exhibits that very well tell the story. Well done!

Dickinson County Heritage Center
Tombstone Talks in Abilene
October 27, 2018
Join us for the 4th Annual Tombstone Talks at the Abilene Cemetery. Reenactors will present the life of the more colorful characters of Dickinson County from a first person narrative. Join our tour guides through a evening tour through the cemetery, stopping at the graves of those historical icons in Abilene's history.

Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum
The next Lunch & Learn program is Thursday, October 25 at noon in the Eisenhower Presidential Library Visitors Center Auditorium, 200 SE 4th, Abilene. Free and open to the public, a light lunch is provided on a first come, first serve basis courtesy of the Eisenhower Foundation.
Author Jim Sherow will discuss his newly released book The Chisholm Trail: Joseph McCoy's Great Gamble. Joseph McCoy bet his fortune on Abilene, Kansas, 150 years ago. Sherow's book follows McCoy's vi
sion and the effects the Chisholm Trail had on the multi million-dollar beef industry that remade the Great Plains, the American diet, and both the national and international beef trade.
The Chisholm Trail shows in vivid terms how a gamble made in the face of uncontrollable natural factors indelibly changed the environment, reshaped the Kansas prairie into the nation's stockyard, and transformed Plains Indian hunting grounds into the hub of a domestic farm culture.
Sherow is a history professor and one of three Kansas State University professors named 2018 University Distinguished Professors, a lifetime title that is the highest honor the university bestows on its faculty members. A fourth-generation Kansan, Sherow is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on Kansas, North American Indian and environmental history. He has authored six books. His 2014 book, Railroad Empire Across the Heartland was named a Kansas Notable Book and received the 2015 Midwestern History Association's Hamlin Garland Prize for the best book. He has taught Kansas history for 25 years and has educated a full generation of social studies teachers across the state.
Following the program, Sherow will be available to sign copies of The Chisholm Trail: Joseph McCoy's Great Gamble, available for purchase in the Presidential Gift Shop.
