NEW RELEASE: THINK OF VISION!
Guide for Preschool Teachers in Spanish
THINK OF VISION: Guide for Preschool Teachers is now available in Spanish.
Both the Preschool and School-aged Guides alert teachers to potential signs and symptoms in children that may indicate the presence of an undetected or untreated vision disorder. If these signs are repeatedly observed in the classroom, an evaluation by an eye doctor is recommended.

CVMA MEMBERS INITIATE
"VISION FOR BOSTON"
PILOT PROGRAM
Four CVMA members (NECO, BMC, 2020 Onsite and Prevent Blindness Northeast region) have worked together with Boston Public Schools (BPS) to plan and instigate a pilot vision program "Vision for Boston", which supports students who have not passed their vision screening, but have not accessed comprehensive eye care.
New England College of Optometry provided the vision screenings at 13 pilot schools in the fall of 2019; Boston Medical Center (Preschool to Grade 3) and 2020 OnSite (Grade 4 and older) expanded their eye exam services for the children identified from the BPS screenings or by the school nurses.
Through partnership with Warby Parker in the pilot, BPS students could receive free eyeglasses. Those receiving eye care in the community could bring a copy of their recent eyeglasses prescription to receive an additional pair.
It is hoped the pilot will also raise awareness in the schools and with families of the importance of well-corrected vision for a child's school readiness, and prompt action if a child does not pass a vision screening.

COMPLETING THE CENSUS MATTERS!
Census Day is April 1, 2020
Approximately 1 million children are not counted every year. If a child is not counted, their school loses $7,000 in funding for programs, reduced school lunch and more. Agencies like like Head Start, SNAP, WIC and Medicaid rely on funds based on the state census count.
YOU CAN HELP!

FEBRUARY IS
AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (AMD) / LOW VISION AWARENESS MONTH
According to estimates 16 million Americans are living with the eye disease, AMD.
AMD affects central vision and may occur in one or both eyes. Symptoms usually appear gradually over time, and may include difficulty seeing in the center of vision, straight lines appearing wavy or missing, and trouble seeing in dim light. Through early detection by a dilated comprehensive eye exam and effective management, the effects of AMD, one of the leading causes of vision loss, can be lessened.
One in 28 Americans aged 40 and above have low vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology refers to low vision as vision loss that cannot be corrected by conventional eyeglasses or medical or surgical treatments.
Prevent Blindness offers essential resources and informational materials at no cost to help people manage their condition.
