Dawes Elementary Community Art Mural Unveiled!
Art has the power to bring unity to a community and Dawes Elementary has proven that! Over the summer, Dawes Elementary, in partnership with the Evanston Arts Council, created an art mural that saw direct collaboration from Dawes students, parents, staff, and community partners. On the final day of collaboration, all stakeholders involved placed their individual handprints on the mural as a sign of their ongoing support for Dawes. The mural is now available for all to see! You can view a picture of the mural below and more photos of the unveiling on our social media platforms.

School Board Members Day - November 15!
Nearly 6,000 elected school board members serve school districts across Illinois and to recognize their outstanding efforts and leadership, November 15 is designated as “School Board Members Day” by the Illinois Association of School Boards! We want to express our gratitude beyond the designated day and thank all of our D65School Board members for their tireless commitment to equity within our district and to ensuring that the voices and best interest of our students and families are evident in all of our actions and policies. This year’s theme for School Board Members Day is “Perseverance through Leadership,” and thanks to the leadership of our committed school board, we are able to make the most out of difficult circumstances and persevere during challenging times, all while still working to achieve the goals necessary for our students to become outstanding citizens.

District 65 Reaches Agreement with EACCP
D65 is happy to share that this October the Board of Education approved a one-year rollover agreement with the Evanston Association of Child Care Professionals (EACCP)! The agreement, which previously expired at the start of the school year, was ratified by EACCP membership in October. The new agreement provides all EACCP members with a 2% increase to their base salaries for the 2020-2021 school year. We deeply value the hard work and many contributions of EACCP members and the dedication and care they have for the children of our school communities. Their collective leadership and commitment to our students has seen them go above-and-beyond during this unprecedented school year and the District looks forward to continued collaboration with the EACCP.

High Five! November Recipient: Mr. Carlos Saldaña!
This week, we want to extend congratulations to Oakton Elementary 2nd grade educator, Mr. Carlos Saldaña (pictured below), in being selected as a High Five! recipient this month! Mr. Saldaña has served the D65 community for four years and was nominated by D65 Family Member, Denise Bouras. Denise shared, “I believe that Mr. Saldaña deserves this award for his extraordinary patience and calm demeanor during his online classes. Like all teachers this year, Mr. Saldaña is facing a variety of challenges, disruptions and unforeseen circumstances on a daily basis yet he always exudes a light spirit that is very welcoming and encouraging for his students. In addition, he is a consummate professional -- he consistently responds to parent requests/questions in a timely manner, provides detailed schedules weekly and precise explanations for all activities. During such an extraordinary time, Mr. Saldaña understands that it is the "ordinary" things - a smile, a sympathetic ear, a kind word - that makes children feel at home in the classroom, whether in person or remotely.” Thank you, Mr. Saldaña, for turning virtual learning environments into familiar and comfortable places for students to learn! All recipients will receive a $100 gift card from sponsorship provided by Byline Bank, a framed recognition certificate, and were recognized at the monthly school board meeting on Monday.
