Puster Families,

We are all beginning to settle in this week. We all needed a minute (or two weeks) to remember how to "do school."

It does appear we will be getting a little (super tiny) break in the weather this weekend. Low 90's sounds refreshing right now! I hope your family enjoys the weekend!

Puster Proud,
Holly

COVID-19
Information & Resources
  • You will be sent a communication of possible exposure if a student or staff member tests positive for COVID. This note will go out to the whole class and any group the child may have participated in that day.
  • We are not conducting close contract tracing investigations at this time. However, if we are aware of confirmed close contact we will notify you.
  • If you receive an exposure notice, your next steps as a parent are to monitor your child for symptoms. If your child is exhibiting 2 or more of the symptoms noted below, please keep your child home and obtain a COVID negative test or alternate diagnosis before returning to school. Notify Nurse Janet at [email protected].
  • All communication around your child's symptoms and diagnosis must be copied to Nurse Janet at [email protected].
  • Your child does not have to quarantine if asymptomatic.
  • If you choose to self-quarantine or if your child is out due to illness, this will be counted as an absence. If work can be made up, it will be pushed out through Google Classroom or Seesaw. Otherwise, the teacher will work to make-up missed instruction upon return.
Please refer to our current district and campus procedures linked above and below and reach out to Holly Haynes with any questions: [email protected].
Notes from the Nurse

to 100.0 degrees
·        Loss of taste or smell
·        Cough
·        Difficulty breathing
·        Shortness of breath

I am also seeing leg pain as a sign in many of the children who test positive.

If your student is not feeling well, please keep them at home and email your child’s assistant principal. Please also keep them home, contact the nurse if your student receives a lab positive COVID test. I will need a copy of the results.

Library Corner:
STEM, Stories and More with Mrs. Stewart
Hello Puster Elementary community, I am so excited to be your library media specialist this year. I truly believe that the library can make a difference in students' lives. Books help students explore, inspire interests, and launch investigations. Stories can encourage them to observe, wonder, predict, invent, and evaluate the world around them. I look forward to an amazing year.

Library: We are starting the year off by reviewing library procedures and expectations, and we will get to check out books on our first library day.

STEM: we are reviewing expectations and the design process. We read The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires, and made a plan for a prototype of something that could help us solve a problem at school.

Morning Announcements: 4th graders wanted to be on the PES morning announcements broadcast!
We will meet on Monday mornings at 7:30 to record our video segments for the week (Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, & next Mon)
We will have 3 anchors introducing our week, recite pledges, our lunch menu, birthdays and more. Don't want to be on camera but still interested? There is an opportunity to just work behind the scenes as well, adjusting slides, images and our script.
If your 4th grader is interested in participating this semester, please fill out this form with them by August 26th at 4:00pm. I will email you and your child with their dates to record Friday August 27th.

Happy reading,
Ariel Stewart [email protected]
Enrichment Groups Beginning 8/31
Parents,

Each week our K-2 teachers, administrators and special education teachers will have the opportunity to receive instruction in the science of teaching reading. Our campus schedule is:

Kinder teachers - 7:30-9:45 on Wednesdays
1st grade teachers - 7:30-9:45 on Tuesdays
2nd grade teachers - 7:30-9:45 on Thursdays

While our teachers are attending these sessions, our students will have opportunities to participate in enrichment rotations with their homeroom group. Rotations include extra art, P.E., and music as well as SEL lessons provided by our counselor, Mr. Smith, and library/STEM lessons provided by our Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Stewart.

Our 3rd and 4th-grade teachers will not participate in the training until next year, though we want our 3rd and 4th-grade students to have the same enrichment opportunities provided one time each month while their teachers participate in extended planning.

Additional Information:
Per House Bill 3 (HB 3), passed by the 86th Texas Legislature in June of 2019, all kindergarten through third grade teachers and principals must complete a Texas Reading Academy by the end of the 2022-2023 school year. The goal of the Texas Reading Academies is to increase teachers’ and principals’ knowledge and implementation of evidence-based practices to positively impact student literacy achievement.

One day a week for the 2021-2022 school year, district K-2 teachers, support SPED staff, and campus administrators will be participating in the group sessions for an hour and a half. Students will participate in enrichment rotations during this time. During training sessions teachers and principals will increase their knowledge of the science of teaching reading to support students’ ability to decode words, understand spoken language, and improve reading comprehension.

As reading and writing are foundational to school success, LISD will continue working with the Texas Education Agency to ensure that all students have access to high-quality reading and writing instruction and highly-effective teachers.

How do I put money on my child's lunch account?
If you would like to put money on your child's account for "extras," please choose one of the following ways.
  • Put money (cash or check) in a sealed envelope with your child's first and last name and homeroom teacher on it. Send it to school with your child, and they can deliver it to the classroom.
  • Visit MySchoolBucks by clicking here and put money on your child's account electronically.
Can I bring birthday treats to school for my child?

Yes, you can purchase birthday treats for your child through Student Nutrition. Please note that we are only allowing birthday treats from the LISD Student Nutrition department. Please click here to order your child's birthday treats today! Please email your child's teacher to inform them that you ordered treats so that we do not have 2 students celebrating birthdays on the same day.
