Thanks to Only In Your State for highlighting this iconic Abilene restaurant.

Whether you're hungry and on the road or just plain hungry, there's a plethora of restaurants in Kansas that'll suit your needs. Most of us enjoy a nice sit-down joint with home-style food and plenty of fried options. This restaurant in small town Kansas has some of the best doggone food, and you'll just have to taste it to believe me. (Plus, isn't most of Kansas countryside whether it's a small town or not?)

Throwback Thursday

Named one of the Kansas Sampler Foundation's 8 Wonders of Kansas - Customs , Abilene's C.W. Parker Carousel is the oldest operational Parker carousel known to exist.

Fun Facts: 24 horses in 12 pairs 4 chariots 50-foot wide platform built in 1901

A Humble Beginning: Charles Wallace Parker dreamed of one day creating and operating amusement devices. Parker got his start after purchasing a portable shooting gallery. He began his career manufacturing amusement devices after improving the design of his shooting gallery and ultimately building his own. Parker became interested in carousels after spending most of the only dollar in his pocket to buy his daughter rides on a carousel instead of buying groceries. Seeing the excitement on his daughter's face and realizing he spent most of his money to see her joy continue, Parker knew he needed to own a carousel.

Amusement King: Parker built his first carousel in 1892 and started the Parker Carnival Supply Company two years later, making him the only carousel manufacturer not operating on the east coast. Parker's business was located in Abilene until 1911 when a dispute over property lines with the city forced his decision to move the entire company to Leavenworth. In Leavenworth, Parker began making visible changes to his carousel. The horses became more grandiose and other animals were featured as mounts. World War 1 and the Great Depression significantly impacted business. The only carousel manufacturers to survive were those that switched to wood carving machines or to aluminum horses. C.W. Parker Amusement Company endured these tough times. After Parker's death in 1932, his son ran the company in Leavenworth until 1955.

Returning to Abilene: Jimmy Weisner purchased the carousel that can be found in Abilene today in 1928. For 38 years, he traveled from town to town operating the carousel. In 1959, Weisner sold his carousel to Tom Knight of Riverton, Wyoming. Knight placed carousel at his drive-in movie theater. After his death, Knight's widow offered Dickinson County Historical Society the opportunity to purchase this rare machine. The people of Abilene raised the $8,900 needed to purchase the carousel and it was finally returned home in 1976. This 1901 carousel is the oldest operational carousel that can be ridden and it is featured at the Dickinson County Heritage Center.

Patriotism in Abilene

It's that time of year again! The City of Abilene's Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking sponsors for the American flags, which are placed on poles from I-70 along Buckeye to the south city limits and from Buckeye west on Third Street. The flags are flown from the Eisenhower Marathon weekend through Veterans Day. Because they are flown for seven months, the flags and poles are more prone to wear and tear. The City of Abilene's Public Works Department replaces them as needed.

Our goal this year is to purchase 200 flags for the 2018 season. The cost of each flag remains the same at $25, which includes the pole and bracket.

Volunteers from the American Legion and VFW attach the flags to the flagpoles. The Public Works Department, Eagle Communications, Abilene Rental and Linder Electric install the flags on the light poles.

We rely on the community to provide funding for this project and hope you will consider purchasing one or more flags this year.

Ellie Carlson presents "Dating Photographs Through Costumes," an interactive presentation.

Family photographs are hard to date once the generation pictured has passed away. Many people have unidentified photos in their collection. Determining an approximate date may help you to know whether the woman in the photo is your grandmother or your great-grandmother. This is where costume dating can be helpful.

Note: Please bring photographs with you to the lecture and we will all try to date them for you using the techniques outlined in the presentation.

Join us at the Dickinson County Heritage Center on Saturday, March 3, at 7 PM for this captivating presentation.

Free admission for this event.

While on an assignment, New York City-based fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) is struck by the beauty of Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn), a shy bookstore employee he's photographed by accident, who he believes has the potential to become a successful model. Jo accepts a modeling contract only because it includes a trip to Paris. Hepburn does her own singing in this 1957 musical directed by Stanley Donen (Singin' in the Rain).

This year marks the 27th Annual Paul H. Royer Film Festival, which offers movies free to the public. This series is sponsored by Robert H. (Hank) Royer, Jr., in memory of his grandfather who was an Abilene (Kansas) High School classmate of Dwight D.  Eisenhower and a founding member of the  Eisenhower Foundation.
