Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

When the days seem hard, the rains too hard, and the news comes of a new variant - what? noooo! When the world seems a bit off its axis, we find comfort in a simple five word quote from Mary Shelly:

The beginning is always today.”

You may roll your eyes at our optimism?
But we believe each day is a new beginning.

Each day brings a new project, a new fiber, a new chance to learn, to grow and help others grow. The Blue Purl is our community and we hope you think of it that way too.

With Labor Day behind us, we see nothing but cool, crisp days ahead, hope for renewal that comes with back to school, back to work, kicking piles of leaves, putting the garden to bed, and knitting sweaters.

We are on full throttle at The Blue Purl. Even with our masks on, it’s a positive vibe, with new yarns, restocks coming in every week, classes that have started, a KAL has been announced , Keri at the table, and Wednesday knit nights.
Everyday is a new beginning.

We are making plans for the upcoming months in our kits, quick patterns for gifts and of course you feel it right? Sweata' Weatha' is upon us.

Mary Shelly, a goth queen, is remembered for writing Frankenstein but she may well have been the ultimate optimist. She suffered incredible tragedy, losing her mother as a baby, her husband as a young mother, as well as three of four children.
And still she wrote these words:

The beginning is always today.”

It really is.

What's New?
Up the Beanstalk
We love it when an easy pattern makes our work look professional. Up the Beanstalk by Jennifer Weissman fits this perfectly. This triangle shaped wrap uses a very simple cable and basic increases to create this gorgeous vine-like floral design that looks so complex! This pattern is perfect for an advanced/adventurous beginner. Tam test knitted her version with mYak Tibetan Cloud, a wonderfully soft and drapey yarn. Visit us to check out her sample in person. We also love it in Fibre Co. Road to China Light or Kelbourne Andorra. The pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry and the yarns are online or in the shop.
Douglas Cardi
Douglas Cardi by Andrea Mowry has us dreaming of cool Fall evenings around a fire pit. We love the cozy look and who can resist pockets? This is the cardigan you want to wear all weekend long. Knit in DK weight with alot of positive ease (very loose!) this intermediate/advanced cardigan is a great vehicle for your favorite Fall palette. We chose our new colors of Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, Farmers Daughter Juicy DK and Jill Draper Kingston to get your ideas brewing. The pattern is available on Ravelry and the yarns are online or in the shop.
Wing-and-Wing
We love this fun graphic shawl by Lori Versaci. Wing-and-Wing is like candy for your eyes and the perfect antidote if you're looking to indulge in your creativity. The pattern is great for an intermediate knitter interested in building their skills. The designer includes detailed instructions on how to work i-cord edges, i-cord bind off, intarsia and even how to make those fun tassels! If you're comfortable following a pattern, this is a great project to teach yourself new skills.

Of course, we wanted to play with yarn & colors too and picked out some color combos. We chose from Brooklyn Tweed Arbor, Farmers Daughter Juicy DK, Spun Right Round Squish DK & Sandnes Garn Double Sunday. We don't have enough space to show all the colors swirling in our heads (black, white & gray version, anyone?) We're happy to help pick out your favorite palette on your next visit. You can purchase the pattern on Ravelry and the yarn is available in our shop and online. Speaking of Lori Versaci- did you notice all her sweater patterns are 20% off thru 9/14? On Ravelry- no code needed!
Jacques Cousteau Hat- the BP Edition
For the intrepid explorers or like-minded folk in your life, we love the Jacques Cousteau Hat, in our Yiba-edited version. Our pattern has instructions for an aran weight or DK weight. For aran weight, we used Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted held with Tynn Silk Mohair. For the lighter weight DK version, we used Sandnes Garn Double Sunday. The pattern is free from us with yarn purchase, available in store or online. Just comment you need this pattern when checking out online.
New Yarns
Noelle
Noelle, milled in Italy, is a merino, alpaca & nylon blend DK yarn great for special accessories. It has a hollow chainette construction that traps warm air while maintaining a lightweight feel.

We created this lovely neck warmer, perfect for adding a little sparkle for the season. We are carrying only 2 colors-gold and sliver in this new yarn. Noelle can be found online or in the store. We also created kits for the Easy 1-Skein Keyhole Scarf, available online or in the shop. The kit includes the free pattern by the Blue Purl team.
La Pampa
La Pampa by Juniper Moon is a chunky organic merino wool that is sustainable, pesticide-free, & humanely raised from Argentina. La Pampa was just introduced for Fall 2021 by Juniper Moon and we are excited to introduce it to you. Meant for a US 9-11 needle, we think this would be great in either accessories or garments. Find the yarn online and in the shop.
Hayfield Spirit Chunky
Hayfield's newest patterned yarn- Spirit chunky is a self striping yarn perfect for crocheters or knitters looking for a colorful pattern for simple stitches. We love it in blankets due to its washability. Wendy already started a crochet piece - The Sundown Blanket - with hers, and some white chunky. The yarn is available in our shop.
New Woolfolk Far & Tynd Fall Colors
Woolfolk's Fall color palette is all adobe and desert warmth this season. We can't get enough of the Palm Springs feel. The colors are only available in the Far & Tynd bases for now. Find them in our shop and online.
Fall 2021 Noro Ito & Silk Garden
Another customer favorite- Noro Ito and Silk Garden has new colorways for the season. Find these in the shop and online.

This issue is full of all the Fall comforts we love. You'll find textured or colorwork yokes in pullovers and cardigans and shawls designed to hug you with warmth. Hooked
All Crochet is handmade - even from the designers
Are you aware that when you see a crochet item on the runway or in the store it is handmade. The intricacy of the chain stitches has not yet been able to be replicated with a machine. Knitting is another story, most all of the knits on the market are machine made.... But that crochet item; someone made that piece with a hook, their hand, and their skill.

That's probably one reason why crocheters are so fab at looking at an item and kind of winging it. Above are 4 vests (they're so in now ;) by designers both modern and vintage. They are inspiring! The colors, the shapes, the awesomeness.

If you are a crocheter and want to learn how to shape a granny square our Oma Goodness class is for you! Just a couple spots left!
