Annual Catholic Appeal
You are invited to participate in Archbishop Etienne’s 2022 Annual Catholic Appeal. The Archbishop’s goal for this year’s Appeal is $10.8 million and, of this amount, our own parish of St. James Cathedral is being asked to raise $319,221. Everything given over and above that goal will come back to the parish for our own needs. This year we intend to use the rebate to support our ministry to immigrants, migrants, and refugees through the St. James Immigrant Assistance Program. I think this ministry is more important now than it has ever been before, given what is going on in our world! We have set our rebate goal at $180,000, which brings our total goal to $499,221.

Would you please consider making a gift to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal? Make your gift online at archseatttle.org/GiveACA.
Learn more about St. James Immigrant Assistance from parishioner Sarah Riggio, who shared her story at the conclusion of the morning Masses last weekend
Our last synod session is Thursday 5/5
  • “I am hopeful about this process. I think the Holy Spirit can do more than we ever imagined. We can be cynical, but this is different, this is a new moment.”
  • “Painful/powerful/wonderful. The Holy Spirit is alive and well.”

Every member of the Cathedral community is invited to participate in the worldwide Synodal process initiated by Pope Francis. “Every encounter–as we know–calls for openness, courage and a willingness to let ourselves be challenged by the presence and the stories of others…. the experience of encounter changes us; frequently it opens up new and unexpected possibilities” (Pope Francis). There is still one more opportunity to participate!

ALL CATHEDRAL READS BOOK CLUB Recently, our parish Sponsor Circle Team welcomed two refugee families from Afghanistan. Under the direction of the St. James Immigrant Assistance Program, we helped these families integrate into American culture, find the resources they and their children need, and provide English language tutoring. To help welcome these families, and better understand their experience, the Immigrant Assistance Program is sponsoring an “All Cathedral Reads” book club about Afghanistan entitled The Sewing Circles of Herat by Christina Lamb. The book chronicles the courage and ingenuity of the Afghan people during the first rule of the Taliban in the early 2000s. The book is readily available, and there will also be some copies in the Cathedral bookstore. Parishioners will be invited to participate in a discussion of the book May 24 at 6:30pm on Zoom. Registration, Christopher Koehler, ckoehler@stjames-cathedral.org.

JOIN THE LAUDATO SI PLATFORM This past year, the Vatican launched the Laudato Si’ Action Platform to empower Catholics throughout the world to take “decisive action, here and now” as we journey towards a better future together on behalf of the Earth, our common home (Laudato Si’ 161). You and your household are invited to enroll in the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, committing to an act of hope for the future we are building together. You are invited to reflect on how the Laudato Si’ Goals connect with core values of loving kindness, responsible stewardship of our place in creation, and care for the most vulnerable. Information, www.LaudatoSiActionPlatform.org or Patrick Barredo, pbarredo@stjames-cathedral.org.

Join Catholics from the parishes of the South Seattle Deanery to learn about Catholic Social Teaching on housing and homelessness and how we can raise our voices to advocate for our houseless neighbors and others who have been pushed to the margins by public policy. Marc Dones from the King County Regional Homelessness Authority and City Councilmembers Lisa Herbold and Andrew Lewis will engage in civil dialogue so that we may learn from one another and find ways to work together to bring housing justice to all in our community.
