conferenceFAS Conference Fund (Reminder)

The FAS Conference Fund provides support for regular faculty members and continuing adjuncts in the Faculty of Arts and Science who are organizing professional conferences, colloquia, symposia, or workshops in the Kingston area or at the Bader International Study Centre in Herstmonceaux. The maximum amount of an award is $1,000. The funds may be increased to $3,000 for use as in-kind matching funds for external funding obtained through successful applications to external programs like the SSHRC Connections Grants Program. If an application for external funds is unsuccessful, the applicant may still be eligible for $1,000 in support from this fund.

Funding is awarded on a competitive basis and priority is given to events that (a) reach a broad audience, particularly at the national or international levels, (b) include student participation, particularly involving presentation of their research, (c) include partnering support from a department or departments and (d) how they incorporate attention to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigeneity. The deadlines for applications are October 1, January 1, April 1, and July 1. Funds must be spent no later than 12 months after the deadline for the competition in which the funding application was submitted. Normally, funding decisions are made, and applicants are informed, no more than two weeks after the relevant application deadline.

custodialChanges to Custodial Support Service

This memo serves as notice that the University intends to proceed with changes to how Custodial Support Services conduct business, effective December 15, 2019.

Queen's University is committed to sustainability. Across campus a new way of cleaning has been adopted that uses a high performance green team specialist method.

The University is implementing these changes in order to better meet operational requirements and to ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines and standardizing of service delivery. By resetting the schedule in this way, we will be better equipped to fulfill customer expectations and respond to end random requests including emergency situations, should they arise.

Custodial Support Services (CSS) will operate a 24-hour work cycle starting from:
  • 6am to 2pm: Day shift focused on washroom cleaning (Red Team) and emergencies that may occur.
  • 2pm to 10pm: Afternoon shift focused on staff related spaces (Blue Team) and emergencies that may occur.
  • 10pm to 6am: Night shift focused on student learning spaces (Yellow Team), common areas, cafeterias, stairs and elevators (Green Team).
As we move towards revitalizing the way Custodial Support Services delivers cleaning services to the university community through the implementation of a new service delivery model, Physical Plant Services (PPS) has created the position of Manager, Specialist Team. With the creation of this new role we will be better positioned to continue our journey towards providing first- rate cleaning services to our clients, which will ultimately contribute to the achievement of the vision of the university.

In recognition of their proven commitment to the new CSS service delivery model and the delivery of quality cleaning services to their clients, Rob Dusharm, Michael McLean and Matthew Rhymer have been appointed to this new role effective December 1, 2019. Rob will manage the Red Team Specialists and will remain the management contact for Area 1 facility occupants. Michael will manage the Blue Team Specialists and will remain the management contact for Area 2 facility occupants; and Matthew will manage the Yellow Team Specialists and will be the management contact for Area 3 facility occupants.

As Managers, Specialist Teams, Rob, Michael and Matthew will continue to partner with the operations management team to improve the cleaning services we deliver to clients as part of our commitment to continuous quality improvement. Please join me in congratulating and wishing them well as they undertake this important new appointment.

Additionally, we are currently recruiting for a 4th Manager, Specialist Team to oversee the Green Team Specialists (common areas, elevators, stairs and hallways, cafeteria,etc.). Lastly, we are also preparing for the recruitment of a supervisor to supervise the Custodial Projects Team (responsible for floor care and management, high dusting, lightbulb replacement and carpet extraction. This supervisor will report to the Manager, Custodial Support Services, Programs, also a new position that is presently at the short- listing stage of the recruitment process.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please feel free to contact Samuel Whyte.
