FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
So clearly 2021 missed the memo.

It was supposed to be less ridiculous, less stupid, than last year.

So far… not so good.

At least my husband found our camping headlamps so we are able to be hands-free as we stumble powerlessly around our pitch-black home at night.

Small blessings.

Here at school, we continue to work on plans for a potential return of students in the days ahead.
(Every time I think about kids in the building, I get a little giddy and have to remind myself that the March 1 date is TENTATIVE; a lot of factors need to be aligned for it to be actual and not aspirational. It’s like my dad would say, “Lord willing and the creek don’t rise,” we will see our students again this spring.)

This morning, I spent a couple of hours with a principal whose school has been in hybrid for several months, getting coached up on the sorts of things to anticipate and prepare for in terms of student return.

The thing that stuck out for me most, beyond all the myriad of infrastructural considerations and minutia of signage and square footage for social distancing and protocols for lunch queuing and all the everything to consider, was this: “Marybeth, prepare yourself for how emotional everyone will be to be back together again. You think you know what it will feel like – but you don’t. Just to see your kids love each other and love the adults around them. It’s intense.”

I hope that my heart can handle more “intense” – it feels like these past few days/weeks/months have handed us all a lot of it already.

Intense frustration and anxiety.

Intense pride and astonishment.

Intense determination and care.

I’m ready for some joy. Some real, intense, joy.

2nd SEMESTER & 2021-2022 REGISTRATION
2nd Semester Begins Tuesday, February 2: The district is creating new class Teams for 2nd semester that will be active on the first day of the semester. We are working hard to ensure that we have a smooth start to 2nd semester, but there may be hiccups on the first day, we thank you for your patience ahead of time. Teachers will be sending out new Teams meeting invites for the first day of the semester, so be sure to check your Teams or Outlook calendar for updates on February 2. 1st semester Teams will still be available for students finishing up assignments.

All of our electives are full year, so for most students, 2nd semester will not have many changes. Freshmen in Health or Fitness 1st semester will automatically be switched into the other class for 2nd semester. There will be some other schedule changes as we work to balance classes for our tentative return to in-person learning on March 1 to ensure proper spacing for safe social distancing in the classrooms. We are working hard to minimize these changes, but they are necessary. We will share 2nd semester schedules as the switchover nears.
Registration for Fall 2021: We are currently planning for Fall registration. We will use Advisory to provide information to students about core and elective classes. As we finalize plans, we'll share with parents and students in the LC News, LCTV, and in Advisory. We will hold virtual parent evenings to have your questions answered and we'll share videos that walk students and parents through the process. There is also plenty of time after the registrations are entered to make any necessary changes.

We will begin posting information on the www.lctigers.com and we have created a channel in the Lewis and Clark HS TEAM to share information. Students can view registration forms for their next grade level and documents from elective teachers that share the highlights of their classes.

We will be using PowerSchool to register. Students MUST know their login/password to register (see the directions in the Information section below to test out access and how to get help).

If you are looking to choice transfer to a different SPS school, the Choice Transfer Applications will open February 8 - March 8. To apply, go here and click on Apply.

Preparing for 2021-2022 Registration: We will begin registration for 2021-2022 in January. The process will be all online through PowerSchool. In order to prepare, it will be important for you know your login and password to PowerSchool and you can get into the program (the login/password is different from your Clever/MS365 login/password).

Directions: Using a computer (not your phone), go to PowerSchool and try log in (do not try the links to reset it yourself, they do not work and be sure to use the link above and not access through Clever or using a Google search for PowerSchool which may take you to a different district's servers).

If you get in, you're good to go! Please write down the login/password in case you forget it before January. There is a chance that even if you know your login/password, it might take you to a screen that says "an administrator has changed your password". You will need to select a new password, so just follow the directions on the screen and enter your current password, then choose a new one that is 8 characters or more.

If you can't get in, your password will need to be reset. Click on the link below to send an email to Mrs. Meyer. Provide your name and simply ask for a password reset. You will receive an email back with directions on how to use a temporary password so that you can get into the system and choose a new password. Please write down the login and new password you choose in case you forget it before January.

FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov for more information. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. We strongly encourage you to create your FSA ID now because it takes approximately 1-3 days for the FSA ID to be verified and ready to be used. Get yours today! Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA

Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? We have a great video resource for you from the Washington Student Achievement Council - FAFSA Line by Line - this video will point out common mistakes, tell you the information you will need to complete the FAFSA, and walk you through every single line in the application. You can also reach out to Mr. Norton for help on FAFSA, college apps, and scholarships!
Senior Remind Group: Seniors are encouraged to join the Senior Remind Text Group to receive updates through out the year on college deadlines, scholarships, college visits, the high school & beyond plan, and more. REMINDERS
PowerSchool: Parents, did you know that you can set up your PowerSchool account to send you updates on student grades, attendance, and more? You can also set up recurring emails with updates on student progress. If you need to set up your account or can't remember your login, contact TheresaM@spokaneschools.org. Here are two quick videos on how to use PowerSchool and how to set up the reminders.

What if I don't have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account?
  • Contact Karen Payne and request the Parent Account Access ID Letter which contains the steps to set up an account, and the access ID and password to add your student to your account.
  • You will need to request the Parent Account Access ID Letter for each student who attends Spokane Public Schools. You will only need to create one account on the PowerSchool Parent Portal and just link all of your students to the one account.
How do I find my student's grades on the PowerSchool Parent Portal?
  • Once you are signed into the PowerSchool Parent Portal, from the left menu choose Grades and Attendance. You will see a column labeled Q1, which shows your student's Quarter 1 grades.
  • You will also see Q2, Q3, etc. These can be used to view grades during the quarter as well as final grades once the quarter and semester end.
What if I want my student's report card mailed to me?
  • Contact Karen Payne to request that your student's report be mailed to you.

  • Bullying and harassment
  • Pornography
  • Reference to drugs & alcohol
  • Violence
  • Insensitive and racist materials
Please use the following strategies to help protect students:
  • Talk over the types of resources your student accesses online and how they should interact with others online in a kind, respectful, and safe way.
  • Only allow use of electronic devices in common rooms of the home, not in bedrooms (if possible).
  • Show an interest in what your child is doing online.
  • Ask to see their work often, including comments and feedback from teachers and peers.
  • Agree to put all electronic devices to bed on the charger at a designated time each night.
  • Regularly review browsing history.
While the district is actively working to provide services to limit potential student exposure, such as high quality internet filters, that service should never replace other safety practices.
Second Harvest Food Distribution: If you need food assistance, Second Harvest has food pick up available around the city throughout the week. Please help us spread the word!
FamilyID Athletic Clearance/Registration: FamilyID is a secure registration platform that provides an easy, user-friendly way to register for activities, while helping us to be more administratively efficient and environmentally responsible.
