Together with you, we empower Oregon’s largest disability population.

Special Olympics Oregon helps those with intellectual disabilities become accepted and valued members of their communities, which leads to a more respectful and inclusive society for all.

We want you to join us to experience the thrill of competition in Esports, at-home skills and fitness challenges through Winter Virtual Games and support this work by joining the Polar Plunge. With your support and encouragement 2021 SOOR athletes will continue to thrive and succeed in the sport of life.

“Special Olympics Oregon has given me great self-esteem while making friends and overcoming challenges I never thought I could overcome, such as learning to Snowboard. Thanks to Special Olympics Oregon, I feel I am a true athlete”

Jack Kain
"I like participating in Special Olympics because it is fun. I get to compete with my friends, make new friends and go to fun places. It is also a good way to stay in shape. This year has been hard not being able to see my friends and compete in person but SOOR has found fun ways to stay connected. We have had virtual dance parties, played bingo, and virtual games. My team also keeps in touch with zoom calls, Facebook, and our group text messaging."

Chris Dyer
“I have been a Special Olympics Athlete for 4 years. I participate in bocce and bowling and recently participated virtually in Athletes and Fitness as a Sport for SOOR's Fall Virtual Games. My favorite thing about Special Olympics Oregon is meeting new friends and doing fun sports! Some of my hobbies include playing video games, watching movies, and hanging out with my chickens.”

Dom Adams
Dom is a dedicated athlete that loves to participate and share in the fun of Special Olympics as he partakes in his favorite sports and interacts with his friends. Being a big fan of Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers, Dom’s favorite sports are basketball and soccer. Dom asks that you cheer him on and support him in his Super Plunge challenge coming up as he takes on this cold quest with his friends virtually.

Rachel Parsons

The Special Olympics Oregon Board is excited to welcome Tiffany Monroe, a Management Analyst for the Springfield Police Department and the new Chair for the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) Executive Council, as a new Director. Tiffany replaces Captain Joel Goodwin with the Corvallis Police Department after his term ended. Board and staff would like to thank Joel for his tremendous service and dedication and are thrilled he will continue to serve on the Executive Council and be an active leader for Special Olympics Oregon LETR.

“Getting to see our officers and athletes working together every week has been my favorite LETR moment. This experience has brought so much joy to both the athletes and the officers and I couldn’t be more pleased!”

“There is passion and caring, but also a sense of obligation and commitment to approach this with the appropriate business perspective and check off that certain things are being done in appropriate ways. We need to be sufficiently on top of the finances and other aspects of programming so that we feel good about how the organization is being managed. This is top of mind for everyone on the Board now.”
DR. ED RAY

One of the first people I met with after moving to Portland to start my role as CEO of Special Olympics Oregon was Dr. Ed Ray, President of Oregon State University. After referring to him several times as Dr. Ray, he finally said, “Stop it – I’m Ed.”

In many ways, Ed is a New Yorker through and through – cut to the chase, cards on the table, and never one to sugar-coat anything. During a very difficult two-year rebuild of our organization with a global pandemic, wildfires, and civil unrest layered in, I could not have asked for a better person to partner with as Board Chair. Ed demands excellence and countless times would say “failure is not an option” when referring to our commitment to the athletes.

Our Mission
Special Olympics Oregon provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children, youth and adults living with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
